"Ce volume offre une nouvelle traduction française de deux textes majeurs de l’historien grec Arrien de Nicomédie (actif sous Hadrien, qui régna de 117 à 138).L’Art tactique d’Arrien, qui n’avait pas fait l’objet d’une traduction française depuis 1758, est un manuel militaire composé de deux parties, la première étant destinée à enseigner au lecteur de quelles unités se composent les armées de l’âge hellénistique, et quelles manoeuvres les phalanges ou les cavaliers sont susceptibles de devoir exécuter dans toutes les circonstances que peut offrir un combat. La seconde partie offre au lecteur une description saisissante des exercices pratiqués par la cavalerie romaine de son temps.L’Histoire de la Succession d’Alexandre, quant à elle, était un vaste ensemble historique composé de dix livres, qui racontait avec abondance de détails les trois années qui suivirent la mort du Conquérant à Babylone en juin 323. Elle embrassait la première guerre des Diadoques et allait jusqu’aux événements de l’hiver 320/319. Cette oeuvre n’est plus aujourd’hui connue que par un résumé byzantin du IXe siècle (fait par le patriarche Photios), et trois passages non résumés nous sont livrés par un témoin papyrologique et deux témoins médiévaux. C’est la première fois en France que ces témoignages sont réunis dans un même volume."--
