Conflict resolution, conflict management and conflict transformations are major themes in this unique book which examines, explores and analyses the mediation attempts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The author shows the most striking characteristic of a protracted internal conflict such as this is its asymmetry and explains that, without meeting basic human needs like identity, recognition, security and participation, resolving any protracted social conflict is very difficult. The Armenian-Azerbaijani case demonstrates how official diplomacy may not be able to solve protracted internal conflicts as, without addressing the real causes of the problematic relationship, attempts at peace-making will always be sporadic and the space for mutual understanding and compromise shrinks. The author shows that conflict transformation has a particular salience in asymmetric conflicts such as this where the goal is to transform unjust relationships and where a high degree of polarisation between the disputants has taken root. Using the Nagorno-Karabakh case, this book focuses on the anatomy and causes of deadlock in negotiations and highlights the many difficulties in achieving a breakthrough.

En 2018 la Révolution de velours, pacifique dans son déroulement, amène au pouvoir son leader Nikol Pashinyan, dans un pays qui a déjà parcouru du chemin depuis sa souveraineté en 1991. C’est à cette Arménie que s’intéresse cette monographie : comment se place-t-elle par rapport à la Russie et les puissances occidentales, telles que l’Union européenne (UE) ou l’OTAN, et pourquoi ?　 Cette étude débute par une partie introductive sur les relations entre la Russie et l’Occident, le champ politique de l’espace post-soviétique étant dominé par ces acteurs et les instruments qu’ils proposent aux Nouveaux États indépendants (NEI). Dans un second temps, l’ouvrage s’intéresse aux évolutions et alignements distincts des NEI dans le système international. Ainsi, les votes de l’Arménie à l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies démontrent une position plus proche de celle de la Russie que de l’UE. Dans ce cadre, une étude des relations russo-arméniennes est proposée dans la troisième partie, afin d’expliquer les choix de politique extérieure de l’Arménie. Enfin, le livre se termine par une réflexion sur une éventuelle exception arménienne dans le Caucase du Sud en matière de coopération avec l’UE et l’OTAN compte tenu de la proximité des relations russo-arméniennes.
