Depuis cent cinquante ans, Beyrouth connaît une succession de croissances débridées, de guerres, de crises économiques et de flux migratoires. C'est dans cet environnement qui, sans cesse, se peuple, se désagrège et se recompose que Gregory Buchakjian à consacré aux habitats abandonnés un projet artistique et une recherche. Englobant l'inventaire de 744 édifices, la collecte d'archives et de témoignages, la rédaction d'une thèse de doctorat et la réalisation de tableaux photographiques où des personnes se meuvent parmi des meubles défoncés et des monticules de déchets, la démarche qui constitue cet ouvrage propose de nouvelles lectures de la ville ainsi que des instruments pour se réapproprier à une époque où elle est confrontée à diverses formes de violonce.

After more than one year of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, thousands of civilians have been killed, and thousands of buildings, heritage sites, and entire cities have been damaged. Along with millions of other Ukrainian women and children, architectural historian Ievgeniia Gubkina had to leave the country, moving further away from the Russian threat in search of safety. Her hometown Kharkiv still remains a target for the Russian army. The war has dramatically changed the geographies of nearly all Ukrainians and returned the work of an archi­tec­tural critic to the traditional mainstream of journalism.This shift has taken Gubkina’s thoughts from the academic context and made them more akin to war reporting. This book contains papers presented, printed, or published online by various media in different parts of the world during the first eight months of the all-out war. Most of the texts were written in late spring and summer 2022 after Ievgeniia and her teenage daughter had evacuated to Paris.

Parce que les architectures de guerre ont toujours posé en préambule la question du rapport au territoire et à sa topographie, parce que les ingénieurs militaires ont toujours placé l'économie de moyens, qui va de pair avec celle des ressources naturelles, au coeur de leurs préoccupations tout en s'attachant à la pérennité du construit, parce que l'originalité et la beauté des formes ne résultent jamais d'aucun style mais de la seule recherche d'efficacité, c'est pour toutes ces raisons que les architectures de guerre, qui ont toujours procédé du biomimétisme et de la paléo-inspiration, constituent aujourd'hui encore, en ce début du XXIe siècle, une source inépuisable de réflexion.

This book investigates architectural and urban dimensions of the ethnic-nationalist conflict in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during and after the siege of 1992?1995. Focusing on the wartime destruction of a portion of the cityscape in central Sarajevo and its post-war reconstruction, re-inscription and memorialization, the book reveals how such spatial transformations become complicit in the struggle for reconfiguration of the city?s territory, boundaries and place identity. Drawing on original research, the study highlights the capacities of architecture and urban space to mediate terror, violence and resistance, and to deal with heritage of the war and act a catalyst for ethnic segregation or reconciliation.
