Abstract

"Much has been written about the relationship between a president and his or her university. Many of the comments have become cliche. "It's not a job, it's an obsession," or "A president's life is a 24/7 commitment." One of the funniest quips defines a university president as someone who lives in a mansion but is always begging for money. How true! Far less has been written about the meaning and impact of actually living in the President's House, particularly a house located in the very heart of South Carolina's flagship university. Now, for the first time, Patricia has succeeded in rendering the house a home and has brought its former residents to life in this wonderfully approachable book. And even though I live in the house, I freely admit that, through Patricia's colorful recounting, I have become reacquainted with its rich history and understand our great good fortune to be its residents"-- "The University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 on a modest parcel of land now called the Horseshoe. While the campus has grown well beyond its original borders, the oak-lined and gated historic Horseshoe remains the heart of campus life. At Home in the Heart of the Horseshoe pays tribute to the handsome regency-style structure at the midpoint of the historic Horseshoe. Constructed in 1854 to house faculty families, then used for sororities, the residence ultimately became the official President's House in 1952. Through the stories and images in this beautiful book, Patricia Moore-Pastides provides a window into life at the University of South Carolina President's House from her perspective as First Lady. Through these pages readers will discover the ways in which the house has become a central location for enriching and celebrating the university community. Beginning with Mrs. Russell's famous senior dinners in the 1950s, the tradition of entertaining continues. From small formal dinners to garden receptions for several hundred, the President's House is alive with celebration. A multitude of thoughtfully planned festivities embrace the entire university community, honoring students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, legislators, and national and international leaders. At Home in the Heart of the Horseshoe is the first book to feature the workings of the President's House and gardens. A pictorial tour through all the public rooms calls attention to the provenance of special antiques and works of art. Presidential events are described and illustrated in charming photographs, and delectable recipes and novel flower-arrangement ideas are shared. Perhaps most compelling are the stories from family members who have lived in the President's House. Through interviews with wives and children--and in one case a grandchild--of former university presidents, readers are privy to their most vivid memories of life in the house and recollections of campus happenings. Experiencing the house as her home, Moore-Pastides shares highlights of her years as First Lady, including the most poignant times as well as the lighter moments. From thieving pets to helpful ghosts, panty raids to Vietnam War protests, and visits from brownie scouts to Pope John Paul II, the tales shared here will warm the heart and in a few cases make readers laugh aloud. And the more than two hundred personal and archival images will reveal not only the evolution of this beautiful historic structure but also the people who made the house a home. "--

Abstract

Bringing together specialists from a range of relevant fields and drawing on a range of global case studies, this book provides the first synthetic body of research on the complex, multifaceted subject of architectural destruction in the context of conflict. Situated in a strong framework, the book addresses several key questions:How has the targeted destruction of buildings and landscapes been used as a deliberate technique of war, conquest, or armed liberation in recent conflicts? How have individuals, cultures, and states responded to the deliberate and collateral destruction of architecture? How have individuals, institutions, and states represented architectural destruction, and to what ends? What are the relationships between the destruction of architecture and the destruction of art, particularly iconoclasm? Does armed conflict engender further processes of architectural destruction that persist in post-conflict environments? What are the relationships between architectural destruction and processes of restoration, recreation or replacement? Considering multiple conflicts, multiple time periods, and multiple locations, this collection provides an essential primer for this crucial topic. " ; "Architecture and Armed Conflict is the first multi-authored scholarly book to address the theme of the politics of destruction from a comparative, interdisciplinary perspective. By bringing together specialists from a range of relevant fields and with knowledge of case studies across time and space, it provides the first synthetic body of research on the complex, multifaceted subject of architectural destruction in the context of conflict.

Abstract

With contributions Francesco Bandarin, Minja Yang and Mechthild Rössler This publication is the fourth in the Heritage Studies series and aims to reflect upon the many dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development within the Heritage Studies discourse. Sustainability as a concept and sustainable development as a goal are presented in official policies within UNESCO's understanding of heritage, in its paradigmatic reflections and in the diversity of theories and methods, including many different and sometimes conflicting understandings of sustainability within this discourse. Thus, the contributors to this publication discuss sustainability as it directly concerns the potential of different approaches to World Heritage and Intangible Heritage. The inclusion of the four dimensions of sustainability - environmental, economic, social and cultural - into the Heritage Studies discourse opens a new perspective on the discourse itself.

Abstract

Abstract

Living with History focuses on a particular aspect of heritage preservation in the 20th century: destruction and post-war reconstruction in Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and The Netherlands. This book establishes a status quaestionis for the historiography of wartime and post-war preservation, and sets these particular developments in preservation history in the context of the general evolution of architecture and urbanism. It studies the specific role of conservationists and heritage institutions and administrations in the overall reconstruction, and examines the specific role of architects and planners in preservation matters.
