Il est illustré par un grand nombre de photographies d'Iwan Baan Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has one of the most important buildings of the 20th century: its parliamentary building by Louis I. Kahn constructed between 1961 and 1982. Little is known, however, about the local architecture scene that has emerged since then. Yet contemporary architecture in Bangladesh exhibits a strong formal idiom that has its roots in tradition and is combined with an innovative handling of local resources such as bamboo and brick. Which design principles and construction methods have established themselves in architecture in the last 25 years? What social trends have influenced architecture ? Which technical innovations had an impact and what has become of their approaches ? Which architects stepped into the limelight at this time and how have they developed ? Christian Schittich has explored these and many other questions. He tells the individual history of outstanding buildings in chronological order, with an eye to the overall context of architectural development of recent years. Looking at selected photographs and drawings documenting the construction process and/or the current state of the building: wherein lies the significance of a building's design, how has it contributed to society, what technical innovations did it involve and what effect did they have ? Or did the construction method prove itself at all? An exciting discourse about three decades of architectural history.

The exhibition ‘The Architect is Present’ shows the work of five influential international studios who have turned austerity into their ethic and aesthetic motto. With offices located in five continents, these young architects work in underprivileged contexts, proving that scarcity of means can stimulate technical inventiveness and community participation, and become the basis for a responsible architecture where the vocation of service does not exclude beauty and emotion. From Norway and Germany to Burkina Faso, and from Paraguay to Australia passing through India or Thailand, these studios have built housing, rural schools or social centers with an extraordinary economy of means, admirable adaptation to collective needs and exemplary material execution.

After decades of being banished from residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the integration of natural water courses into the built environment, rainwater management, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquility or drama such as pools or fountains - all these aspects are not only encountering renewed interest among architects and urban planners, but they are also greeted with appreciation by the general public. This book reveals the wide variety of possibilities for using water as a creative element in the city, in art, in the landscape and architecture. The works are organized in seven categories and encompass large-scale masterplans, urban plazas and parks, river restaurations but also interior design schemes and art objects. Amongst the works documented are the landscape design for Dubai Business Park, a river restauration in Bishan Park in Singapore, landscaping for a new town in Tianjin, China, the schemes for Telecom Park, Taipei and Vuores Central Park in Tampere, Finland, and the design for Civic Square Seattle.Herbert Dreiseitl, born in 1955, is a sculptor, water artist and landscape architect. After his studies, he set up his office, Atelier Dreiseitl, in Überlingen on Lake Constance in 1980. He has realised numerous projects in the fields of stormwater management, water art and landscape architecture. He is active in lecturing worldwide and his work is widely published. Dieter Grau, born in 1963, gardener and landscape architect, has been working for the Atelier Dreiseitl since 1994. In 1996 he became head of the landscape architecture department there. He is involved in planning projects around the world and lectures frequently. "Pamphlet Architecture 29: Ambiguous Spaces, Naja & deOstos features The Pregnant Island and Nuclear Breeding. These two projects develop alternative urban concepts that address the challenges presented by the specific situations and social dynamics described in controversial locations such as the Brazilian Tucurui Dam and a former English nuclear test site. Using narrative techniques, fictional programs, and building devices, Ambiguous Spaces explores people, communities, and even entire cities oppressed by a lack of freedom."--Jacket.
