'A Section of Now' aims to re-establish a dialogue between architecture and society that would allow architecture to begin to contend with and address our changed and changing social norms. The publication serves as a meditation on new behaviours, rituals, and values and their spatial implications, and seeks to catalyse urban and architectural interventions that accommodate, influence, and, in some cases, pre-empt our new lived realities. Authors address topics ranging from the safety of digital spaces to how normative life trajectories affect the elderly and the many selves each of us puts forward, while architects present frameworks for, among other things, spaces for blended families, thirty-year-old retirees, and contested monuments. Bringing together analytical essays about the contemporary moment and the direction in which society is moving, projective texts that outline new architectural types to address societal needs, alongside television series, photography, and architecture and design projects, 'A Section of Now' outlines a new relationship between the spaces in which we live and the ways we live within them. Architect, editor, and curator Giovanna Borasi is Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

This book is about social, cultural and philosophical essays about spaces, people and the designed world. As society rapidly changes, so too does our relationship with design and the spaces of the designed world. Meanings of Designed Spaces is a collection of articles by -- and interviews with -- renowned design academics and professionals exploring how people make meaning using design today, and how "designed space" both shapes and is shaped by technology, business, ethics, culture, sustainability and society. Questions posed include: How does designing our world provide meaning in our lives? How is this meaning constructed? What is design research within this framework? How do interiors influence our social, cultural and psychological ways of being? How is the designer's role evolving in relationship to other stakeholders? What are possible ways we can understand and respond to the social, political, ethical and cultural issues we face? The book's subject matter moves from the theoretical to the practical and includes, at times, contradictory viewpoints, providing a springboard for conversation and debate.

“Paul Gees (b. 1949) intervenes, assembles, combines, tinkers and experiments with wood, steel and stone – the fundamental materials which since time immemorial have been linked to the basic conditions of architecture. His work has in the course of time not been characterised by changes of style but by consistent and gradual continuing work on a rhizomatous oeuvre, growing out of an awareness regarding the intrinsic beauty of matter, heightened by interventions that continue to put pressure on the matter and ‘our’ mind.”From ‘Sculpture in the domain of the possibilities of architecture’ Luk Lambrecht, in: Ohne Warum

Pieter Vermeersch (Belgium, 1973) is well-known for his gradual wall paintings that create powerful visual experiences. Vermeersch combines painting with architecture and works on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, marble and photographs. Beyond the traditional borders of the canvas, his investigations result in large-scale spatial interventions that manipulate the space. Time, colour and space are the building blocks of his oeuvre: these concepts lie at the foundation of his gradual murals and architectural interventions. 17 Signatures presents a complete survey of Vermeersch's work, from the beginning of his career until his recent solo exhibition at Museum M Leuven, and includes a broad selection of painted works (canvases, stones, photographs, walls), installations and sketches. The book is organized by theme and is beautifully designed by the Dutch design studio Mevis & Van Deursen. Every copy is unique as each cover is printed in a different colour variation.Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (15.03.-11.08.2019).

Marjan Teeuwen creates large-scale architectural installations in buildings that are subsequently demolished following her interventions. She disrupts the materials of construction and structure and builds new artistic images in which floors are tilted, walls are removed, and stacks of debris either run rampant or are painstakingly ordered into architectural sculptures. Constructive forces go hand in hand with destruction and decay in Teeuwen's work. This book presents several installations from her 'Destroyed House' series, including the recent project 'Destroyed House Gaza'. By choosing to work in occupied territory, Teeuwen allows the socio-political context to penetrate her method.
