This book, 'Our Sea of Islands: New Approaches to British Insularity in the Late Middle Ages,' edited by Matthew Boyd Goldie and Sebastian Sobecki, explores the concept of insularity and maritime networks in the context of the British Isles during the late medieval period. It draws on a range of disciplines, including geography, genealogy, law, and politics, to examine how the islands of the Northeast Atlantic were interconnected through cultural and trading systems. The book challenges traditional views of the British Isles as isolated entities and instead presents them as part of a dynamic archipelago. Inspired by J.G.A. Pocock's notion of 'Atlantic archipelago,' it reimagines historical narratives of movement and connection across these islands. This work is intended for scholars and students of medieval studies, history, and cultural geography.

This is the first comprehensive study on archipelagic regimes published since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982. The book traces the historical evolution of the archipelagic concept in international law and examines the definition of archipelagos and archipelagic states. The nature, status and regime of the waters of different types of archipelagos is examined and analysed from the perspective of archipelagic states and is based on the requirement of such states for territorial integrity and self-determination. The book introduces the concept of `Ocean States' and links Ocean States with the archipelagic concept. The archipelagic concept is viewed as a practical as well as a functional basis for the determination of the territorial limits of Ocean States.
