"Die arabischen Dokumente der Vormoderne gewinnen als einzigartige Quellen zunehmend das Interesse der Fachwelt. Zwar schreitet die Digitalisierung der Dokumente voran, doch fehlen nach wie vor systematische lexikalische Hilfsmittel. Der vorliegende Band soll diese Lücke für den Teilbereich der arabischen Epistolographie schliessen. Das Glossar beruht auf einem Korpus von rund 500 Brieftexten aus dem Ägypten des 7.-16. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., die der Verfasser ediert hat, wobei sämtliche Textsorten, von familiären Briefen über Geschäftsbriefe bis hin zu Edikten, vertreten sind. Das Korpus ist im Glossar in Form eines Lexikons systematisch, also nicht selektiv oder punktuell, ausgewertet, wobei Phraseologie und Syntax besondere Beachtung finden. Auch pragmatische Gesichtspunkte sind berücksichtigt. Die Stichwörter werden in arabischer Schrift und Transkription, gefolgt von der Bedeutungsangabe, angegeben, die Belege in Transkription. Zusätzlich sind schwierige Belege übersetzt. Die Zahl der Texte und die Abdeckung aller Textsorten machen das Glossar zu einem wichtigen Hilfsmittel nicht nur für die arabische Papyrologie, sondern auch für Arabistik und Islamwissenschaft insgesamt"-- "The work is the first comprehensive lexical tool for pre-modern Arabic epistolography. Arabic letters on papyrus challenge the modern reader. There are few to no diacritical dots to distinguish homographs, no systematic spacing between single words, and in the majority of cases a low degree of graphical structuring. However, contemporary readers usually read and understood these documents easily - probably because the recipient of a letter knew what to expect. The letters are formulaic, and their information packaging follows an algorithm typical for their time and content.
