In this cultural anthropological examination Frauke Johanna Ahrens enquires into the scientific significance of the herbarium sheets of the Herbarium Göttingen in the period from 1832 to 1852. Based on a historical, object-focused ethnography and praxeology she itemizes how during the establishing phase of the collection institutionalized in 1832 the scientific practices and epistemic interests mutually influenced one another and found expression in the botanical specimens themselves. Each of the five chapters is dedicated to one practice - opening up the collection, ascribing values, acquiring plant material, doing research on herbarium sheets and teaching with herbarium sheets. Together with detailed object descriptions, the analysis emphasizes the materiality of knowledge in this way.

Society is never just a localized aggregate of people but exists by virtue of its members' narrative and conceptual awareness of other times and places. In Jukka Siikala's work this idea evolves into a broad ethnographic and theoretical interest in worlds beyond the horizon, in the double sense of "past" and "abroad." This book is a tribute to Jukka's contributions to anthropology by his colleagues and students and marks his 60th birthday in January 2007. By exploring the near, distant, inward and outward horizons towards which societies project their reality, the authors aim at developing a new, productive language for addressing culture as a way of experiencing and engaging the world.

This work digs deep into sampling practices across audio-visual media, from found footage filmmaking to Internet 'memes' that repurpose music videos, trailers and news broadcasts. The book extends the conceptual boundaries of sampling by emphasizing its inter-medial dimensions, exploring its politics, and examining its historical and global scope.

This book explores a new interpretation of Andy Warhol's The Last Supper Series . It brings together two worlds, the sacred and the secular. By showing how the sacred is manifest in advertising, it demonstrates the metaphorical power of popular imagery. Warhol bore out the proposition that an artist is essentially a "Yours faithfully". The essence of his Last Supper series lies in the mystery that should remain so: 'mirari non rimari sapientia vera est'. To scrutinize the host would be unfaithful to Christ, who said: "This is my Body". To perceive Warhol's work as simply signifying itself would be unfaithful to America's most influential artist. A case in point is The Last Supper (Dove) : pictorial analysis proves that Leonardo's Il Cenacolo was not robbed of its sublimity. Warhol remained faithful to it as a means of unveiling the holy.
