Abstract

This book provides state-of-the-art and up-to-date discussions on the pathology-related considerations and implications in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics. It presents fundamental engineering and mechanical theories concerning the biomechanics of orthopaedic and anatomical structures, and explores the biological and mechanical features that influence or modify the biomechanics of these structures. It also addresses clinically relevant biomechanical issues with a focus on diagnosis, injury, prevention and treatment. The first 12 chapters of the book provide a detailed review of the principles of orthopaedic biomechanics in the musculoskeletal system, including cartilage, bone, muscles and tendon, ligament, and multiple joints. Each chapter also covers important biomechanical concepts relevant to surgical and clinical practice. The remaining chapters examines clinically relevant trauma and injury challenges in the field, including diagnostic techniques such as movement analysis and rehabilitation intervention. Lastly it describes advanced considerations and approaches for fracture fixation, implant design, and biomaterials.

Abstract

Many of the existing books focusing on the orthopedic management of patients with cerebral palsy encompass only care for the young patient, but this practical text reviews and delineates orthopedic care for patients with cerebral palsy throughout the lifespan. Readers will find a discussion of both non-operative and operative orthopedic management across all ages and functional levels. The text presents a general overview of cerebral palsy, evaluation of patients with cerebral palsy, and procedures commonly used to treat various orthopedic conditions in patients with cerebral palsy. Spasticity management and gait evaluation are likewise highlighted, and surgical chapters cover techniques for the hip, knee, foot and ankle, and spine. It also incorporates chapters focused on issues related to the rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy, including bracing, orthotics and other durable medical equipment, physical and occupational therapy, pain management, and adaptive activities and sports, which aim to improve the overall quality of life for patients through the lifespan. Finally, there is a chapter focused on the care transition from childhood to adulthood, an area of importance often neglected in current texts covering patients with cerebral palsy. Whether in the operating room, multi-specialty clinic or private office, Orthopedic Care of Patients with Cerebral Palsy will be a go-to resource for orthopedists, pediatricians and all medical professionals caring for this population. .

Abstract

This book offers a truly comprehensive overview of the understanding and treatment of massive and irreparable rotator cuff tears, a painful and disabling shoulder condition that continues to pose major challenges. A thorough examination of basic science issues and evidence lays the foundation for discussion of key controversies in the field and exposition of a practical approach to treatment in which the role of both conservative and surgical management is explained. Special insights are provided into the new biological and nonoperative approaches that are becoming increasingly popular among practitioners. All potential surgical techniques are described, from partial repair and tendon transfer, to the use of dedicated implants. In addition, the value of anesthesia and regional blocks, both during surgery and in the postoperative phase, is discussed. The concluding section addresses particularly complex scenarios and offers guidance on the management of treatment complications and failures. Written by leading international shoulder experts, the book will be of value for shoulder surgeons, rehabilitators, and other health care practitioners.

Abstract

This unique book is a practical, “go to” source of comprehensive information on the care of peroneal tendon injuries, accurately illustrating this hot topic with many anatomical drawings of how the anatomy influences the diseases we see clinically. This presentation opens with a review of the normal anatomy, biomechanics and examination of the peroneal tendons, followed by a discussion of congenital variations and imaging strategies used in diagnosis and evaluation. Both conservative and surgical management techniques are then elucidated in injury-specific chapters, from peroneus brevis splits and stenosing tenosynovitis to painful os peroneum syndrome (POPS) and acute dislocation. Chapters on rehabilitation and comorbid pathologies round out the presentation. The diagnosis of peroneal tendon injury is much more common today than it was 20 years ago. Utilizing the latest evidence and presenting the most cutting-edge management techniques, The Peroneal Tendons will be useful for orthopedic and podiatric surgeons, sports medicine specialists, and students and residents in these areas. .

Abstract

The Bone Book: An Orthopedic Pocket Manual is a complete guide to the essentials of orthopedics in today's busy hospital and outpatient settings. Concise chapters provide the basic knowledge that all orthopedic surgery residents, medical students, and supporting staff must know to handle the full range of conditions, injuries, and diseases for patients in the operating room and emergency department. Included are essentials of musculoskeletal anatomy, physical examination, orthopedic emergencies, and emergency room consults, including care for fractures, dislocations, bone/joint infections, and spinal cord injuries. Additional chapters cover operative room basics, such as patient positioning, prepping, and draping, and common orthopedic techniques, such as splinting, joint aspiration, and regional blocks. By compiling information commonly passed down from senior to junior surgeon, the authors have distilled a wide range of orthopedic fundamentals into one easy-to-read book.
