Dans cette nouvelle étude d'histoire globale, Olivier Grenouilleau revisite à neuf les trois grandes dimensions d'un très vieux sujet : chronologique, en remontant dans le passé à partir des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, parfois jusqu'à l'Antiquité ; géographique, en portant le regard au-delà du monde occidental, jusqu'à la Chine, au Japon et aux mondes musulmans ; thématique, en dépassant l'histoire des religions, pour se pencher sur l'analyse de la pensée et des pratiques politiques, la géopolitique et les relations internationales. Loin de se réduire à la France et à Victor Schoelcher ou aux Etats-Unis et à l'Atlantique colonial, la question de l'abolitionnisme couvre en effet un large spectre. Si l'esclavage n'est jamais allé de soi (sinon pourquoi aurait-on inventé tant d'alibis pour le légitimer ?), ce n'est qu'à partir de la fin du XVIIIe siècle que des hommes se sont élevés afin non de le réformer ou de l'"humaniser", mais de l'abolir. L'auteur montre que ce caractère profondément révolutionnaire et largement méconnu du projet abolitionniste se conjuguait avec un réformisme de l'action. Apparu autour de quelques hommes inscrits dans des réseaux internationaux, il s'est incarné dans la création de sociétés abolitionnistes, qui, via la Grande-Bretagne, parviendront à le transformer en une croisade planétaire. Quoique fondé sur des valeurs profanes et religieuses, l'abolitionnisme dut sans cesse se justifier sur le terrain de l'utile, et notamment de l'économie politique. Cela n'alla pas sans des relations ambiguës entre abolitionnisme et colonisation, au nom d'un "commerce légitime" avec l'Afrique en particulier. Au final, Olivier Grenouilleau montre comment le projet abolitionniste a pu s'élever d'un combat solitaire de quelques individus à un phénomène global inaugurant une liste ininterrompue de conquêtes au nom des droits de l'homme.

Two epochal developments profoundly influenced the history of the Atlantic world between 1770 and 1870-the rise of women's rights activism and the drive to eliminate chattel slavery. The contributors to this volume, eminent scholars from a variety of disciplines, investigate the intertwining histories of abolitionism and feminism on both sides of the Atlantic during this dynamic century of change. They illuminate the many ways that the two movements developed together and influenced one another.Approaching a wide range of transnational topics, the authors ask how conceptions of slavery and gendered society differed in the United States, France, Germany, and Britain; how women's activism reached across national boundaries; how racial identities affected the boundaries of women's activism; and what was distinctive about African-American women's participation as activists.
