ABOUT THE BOOK A young boy, somewhere around eight or nine years old, eagerly rushes out to meet the rest of the neighborhood boys. Coming for to Carry Me Home examines the concept of race in the United States from the 1830s, when the abolitionists rose to prominence, until the 1880s, when the Jim Crow regime commenced. J. Michael Martinez argues that Lincoln and the Radical Republicans were the pivotal actors, albeit not the architects, that influenced this evolution.

"Theodore Parker (1810-1860) was one of the most influential preachers and abolitionists in 19th-century Boston. For his fight against the decay of the American society at the time of slavery as well as clerical and political corruption, his most important weapon was his effective use of language. This book contains a survey of Parker's rhetoric and the role of proverbs and proverbial expressions in political oratory in general that is followed by a detailed analysis of Parker's proverbial rhetoric in many of his speeches, sermons, and letters"--Back cover.

Two epochal developments profoundly influenced the history of the Atlantic world between 1770 and 1870-the rise of women's rights activism and the drive to eliminate chattel slavery. The contributors to this volume, eminent scholars from a variety of disciplines, investigate the intertwining histories of abolitionism and feminism on both sides of the Atlantic during this dynamic century of change. They illuminate the many ways that the two movements developed together and influenced one another.Approaching a wide range of transnational topics, the authors ask how conceptions of slavery and gendered society differed in the United States, France, Germany, and Britain; how women's activism reached across national boundaries; how racial identities affected the boundaries of women's activism; and what was distinctive about African-American women's participation as activists. Their thought-provoking answers provide rich insights into the history of struggles for social justice across the Atlantic world.
