Plus d'un demi-siècle après la mort du philosophe Emile Chartier dit Alain, paraît son "Journal inédit". Ce gros volume rédigé entre 1937 et 1950 doit être lu d'un point de vue à la fois philosophique et historique. Jusqu'alors, l'auteur des "Propos de politique" se présentait comme un radical-socialiste ou comme un penseur de l'antimilitarisme. Régulièrement au programme du bac, professeur au Lycée Henri-IV, il a gagné sa place parmi les plus grands philosophes du siècle dernier. Que contient alors ce journal longtemps caché à la vue du public ? Des propos antisémites et même... des lectures enthousiastes de "Mein Kampf" et des éloges du Führer ! Il fallait Michel Onfray pour s'aventurer "crayon en main" dans ce journal qui, si l'on évite tout raccourci ou anachronisme, décrit une époque où la confusion de la guerre et de la politique l'a emporté sur la pensée libre.

Et si la France n'était pas seulement cette patrie des libertés, des lumières, des droits de l'homme que nous disent les légendes et la bonne conscience officielles ? Et s'il fallait en finir avec la trop commode habitude qui fait toujours chercher ailleurs - à Berlin, à Moscou, par exemple - les sources de la barbarie et des égarements contemporains ? Et s'il était temps, enfin, de regarder aussi chez nous, à nos portes, dans nos mémoires, pour tenter de rendre compte de cette infamie discrète ou parfois brusquement explosive qui, de loin en loin, nous rappelle à la réalité ? Telle est la question posée ici par Bernard-Henri Lévy. Et telle l'exigence qui commande à cette enquête, à ce voyage au bout de l'idéologie française. L'« idéologie française » ? Il entend par là une masse, un bloc, comme une hideuse banquise de textes qui cheminent et dérivent depuis un siècle maintenant, à la surface de notre culture. Une purulente plaie de mots qui, souvent, ont eu le poids des choses et qui, marqués au sceau de nos plus dignes penseurs nationaux, n'ont jamais vraiment cessé de suinter dans nos terres et d'envenimer nos têtes. Un ventre fécond, abominablement fertile, quoique obstinément ignoré, et où se sont enfantés, de l'affaire Dreyfus à Vichy et de Vichy jusqu'à nos jours, quelques-uns des plus sombres délires de l'Âge où nous vivons. Bref, la matrice de ce qu'il appelle - en construisant son concept et en déduisant ses figures - le fascisme aux couleurs de la France.

On Vichy and the Shoah, we thought we knew everything. This book shows that there is still much to discover. Responding to a series of key questions, Laurent Joly deeply renews the story of the persecution of Jews under the Occupation and sweeps away many misconceptions. Why, since the summer of 1940, did Marshal Petain's regime trigger an anti-Semitic policy?
