Abstract

Souvent réunis dans une même perception des "mondes froids", le Grand Nord et le Grand Sud n'ont pourtant jamais cessé d'affirmer une identité propre. Centré sur le pôle Nord, l'Arctique est une région majoritairement océanique aux contours incertains. L'océan Arctique, recouvert d'une banquise à l'extension saisonnière, abrite de nombreuses espèces animales. Les terres qui l'encerclent constituent une aire d'occupation pour des peuples autochtones, dont le défi actuel est d'inventer un modèle polaire de développement durable. Cette région est une des clés de l'équilibre de la planète. Son réchauffement permet aux chercheurs de modéliser notre avenir climatique et sonne le retour des enjeux liés à l'exploitation des richesses boréales. Quant à l'Antarctique, centré sur le pôle Sud, c'est un continent vide d'hommes, presque entièrement recouvert d'une calotte glaciaire, mais qui offre une biodiversité longtemps sous-évaluée. C'est au cœur de ce continent, sanctuarisé depuis 1959, que l'on a pu affirmer l'impact des sociétés humaines et des émissions de gaz à effet de serre dans les bouleversements climatiques majeurs que nous vivons. Changement climatique, énergie, écologie humaine, développement et protection : ces régions concentrent les problèmes de l'avenir de la planète. En offrant au lecteur la possibilité de découvrir ces régions à la fois mythifiées et méconnues, cet atlas permet de comprendre comment le réchauffement climatique peut les modifier et d'analyser avec plus de clairvoyance les enjeux géostratégiques dont elles sont l'objet.
