Abstract

Abstract

Male circumcision has been practiced since the dawn of human culture and may be performed for medical and non-medical reasons. Although a simple procedure, if not properly performed it may lead to minor or even serious complications, such as urethral or glanular injury. Circumcision is performed using various techniques, including the classic open technique, clamp technique, and laser /electrocautery technique, with various outcomes in terms of safety. The debate over the pros and cons of cultural circumcision continues, with experts in the field holding divergent opinions. The purpose of this book is to present an overview of the historical background of male circumcision and to describe different circumcision techniques.

Abstract

Surgical Guide to Circumcision is a compendium of the who, what, where, why, and most importantly, the how of circumcision. Given that one third of the world’s males have undergone this most ancient of surgical procedures, a contemporary resource on the subject is in order. Most circumcisions are elective with no acute medical necessity; that is, most are done for cultural reasons. Thus, in addition to being a standard surgical guide for those who perform circumcision, this book is an anthology of circumcision, from its prehistoric roots to its present day admixture of religion, culture, and medicine. Surgical Guide to Circumcision is a fully illustrated, step-by-step guide to the most common techniques of circumcision and addresses aspects such as informed consent, religious and cultural sensitivities, pre-exam, post-care, pain control, and prevention and management of potential complications. Written by experts in the field, Surgical Guide to Circumcision will appeal to family physicians, pediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, nurses, urologists, and anyone with a general interest in circumcision.

Abstract

Back cover: John Anthony Dunne argues that, in Galatians, Paul puts forth suffering, rather than receiving circumcision, as a badge that demarcates the true people of God who are set apart in Christ for future blessing and vindication. "In his letter to the Galatians, Paul writes that his Gentile audience should not illegitimately appropriate Jewish customs, especially circumcision. As a way to understand why Paul deems circumcision in this context to be so egregious, being a matter of apostasy rather than simply an adiaphoron, John Anthony Dunne argues that the themes of suffering and persecution point to the coercive nature of the conflict in Galatia. What is at stake for Paul is allegiance to the crucified Christ. Due to the realities inaugurated by the Christ-event and the implications of participating in the Messiah's death and resurrection, suffering for the sake of the cross is to be endured instead of succumbing to the compulsion to be circumcised. Suffering persecution, rather than receiving circumcision, demarcates the true people of God who are set apart in Christ for future blessing and vindication." -- ‡c From publisher's description.
