Deals with the efforts of the Japanese monk Shunjobō Chōgen (1121-1206) to restore major buidlings and works of art lost in civil war. This work focuses on the statues and buildings associated with Chōgen and his followers and places the visual arts of Japan into the ritual and socio-political context of their time.
