Abstract

"Alexandra Chasin’s remarkable stories employ forms as diverse as cryptograms (in 'ELENA=AGAIN') and sentence diagrams (in 'Toward a Grammar of Guilt') to display her interest in fiction as a form constituted by print on the page, every bit as much as poetry. In "They Come From Mars," the words are arrayed on the page like troops, embodying the xenophobic image of invading armies of undocumented immigrants that animates the narrative. One story incorporates personal ads ('Lynette, Your Uniqueness'), another is organized alphabetically ('2 Alphabets'), while another leaves sentences unfinished ('Composer and I'). A number of stories take metafictional turns, calling attention to the process of writing itself. The last piece in the collection plays with genre distinctions, including an index of first lines and a general index. Set in New York, New England, Paris, and Morocco, these tales are narrated by men and women, old and young, gay, straight, and bisexual; one narrator is not a person at all, but a work of art. Each of these deft, playful, and sometimes anarchic fictions is different from the others, yet all are the unmistakable offspring of the same wildly inventive imagination."- adapted from Amazon.com

Abstract

"Part art history essay, part experimental fiction, part theoretical manifesto on the politics of equivalence, Helicography examines questions of scale in relation to Robert Smithson’s iconic 1970 artwork Spiral Jetty. In an essay and film made to accompany the earthwork, Smithson invites us to imagine the stone helix of his structure at various orders of magnitude, from microscopic molecules to entire galaxies.Taking up this invitation with an unrelenting and literal enthusiasm, Helicography pursues the implications of such transformations all the way to the limits of logic. If other spirals, from the natural to the man-made, were expanded or condensed to the size of Spiral Jetty, what are the consequences of their physical metamorphoses? What other equivalences follow in turn, and where do their surprising historical, cultural, and mechanical connections lead? This book considers a number of forms in order to find out: the fluid vortices of whirlpools, hurricanes, and galaxies; the delicate shells of snails and the threatening pose of rattlesnakes; prehistoric ferns and the turns of the inner ear; the monstrous jaws of ancient sharks; a baroque finial scroll on a bass viol; a 19th-century watch spring; phonograph discs and spooled film; the largest open-pit mine on the planet. The result is a narrative laboratory for the “science of imaginary solutions” proposed by Alfred Jarry (whose King Ubu also plays a central role in the story told here), a work of fictocriticism blurring form and content, and the story of a single instant in time lost in the deserts of the intermountain west."

Abstract

"The Latin American dictatorships of the 1970s-80s (dirty wars against civilian population) coincided with the period of women's liberation. Vol. deals with incursion and participation of women in all levels of society, but especially in the literary-political sphere. Work is concerned with how women writers responded to these regimes in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay through the literature of Cristina Peri Rosi, Diamela Eltit, Nélida Piñon, and Reyna Roffé. Theoretically well grounded in feminist and political theory and extremely well written, this lucid book represents a breakthrough in women's studies and a welcome respite from the feminist canon which has overworked the texts of a small number of women writers. Recommended as a point of departure for new studies on women"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
