«E qui, nella mia affascinazione per questa misteriosa scrittura, sta la vera ragione del mio lavoro». Così Piero Meriggi (1899-1982) giustificava la sua “diserzione” dalle lingue anatoliche per proseguire la sua ricerca sui sistemi di scrittura detti “proto-elamita” (PE) ed “elamita lineare” (EL). Quarant’anni dopo, questo fascino è rimasto intatto: il sistema di scrittura PE, creato alla fine del IV millennio a.C., è infatti uno dei più antichi al mondo e all’interesse per le origini di un fenomeno si sovrappone l’attrazione per una scrittura ancora in gran parte indecifrata, caratteristica che condivide con la scrittura EL, apparsa in Iran quasi 1000 anni dopo, verso la fine del III millennio a.C.La pubblicazione di questo volume da parte del Dipartimento Asia, Africa e Mediterraneo dell’Università “L’Orientale” rende accessibile il lavoro di ricerca che F. Desset ha dedicato a queste antiche rappresentazioni del sapere, siano esse di natura economica e contabile come le tavolette PE o dalla forte connotazione ideologica come le iscrizioni EL, e costituisce una tappa importante nello studio di una delle creazioni più significative della civiltà umana: la scrittura.Il volume è arricchito da numerose tavole esplicative e foto a colori.
