Exhibition of the production of an emblematic artist of the national and international contemporary scene. Since 1999, Alÿs has been producing videos that document the games that children play on the street and in courtyards around the world. Childrenœs Games is an ongoing archive of urban practices that modernization has been banishing from everyday life as the concept of public space is distorted by the domination of motor vehicles and free time by electronic diversions. Many of these videos have been shot in relatively economically underdeveloped regions of the world, where the strength of tradition and community have allowed the shared life of a childhood on the street to survive. While they frequently have a direct value as ethnographic documentation, they also metaphorically record transformations and conflicts in contemporary societies. But both in the mysterious way in which certain games are played practically identically in extremely different societies, as well as in their human value, they also become a signifying mechanism that unites a variety of cultures and ways of life. "Some time ago, Francis Alÿs told me that Childrenœs Games was one of his favorite projects: Sometimes I think that the only way I should spend my time is by finishing this series. After all, it was becoming increasingly difficult to find these games being played in contemporary cities and societies." --Page 17.

This immersive publication explores the artistic journey of one of today's most prominent conceptual artists, with a specific focus on his groundbreaking series, "Children's Games." Whether he's moving a sand dune in Peru or pushing an enormous ice block through the streets of Mexico City, Francis Alÿs is constantly seeking to decipher complex social, political, and cultural issues in ways that are simultaneously affecting, imaginative and provocative. Highlighting rarely seen source material, this richly illustrated book delves into the impulses behind Alÿs's influential works. Celebrating the breadth and importance of the artist's work, a series of essays by leading scholars and writers look at his studio practice and influences across art, history and literature, revealing new perspectives on his prolific career and ongoing preoccupations. It also examines the most recent iteration of his critically acclaimed series Children's Games, in which he documents children's games from various cultures around the world. From whimsical explorations of everyday life to his engagement with cross-cultural contexts from Latin America to North Africa and the Middle East, Alÿs's work serves as a platform for navigating the world, inviting viewers to engage with the poetic and transformative potential of artistic expression.

Francis Alÿs has documented children at play all over the world, from kids playing knucklebones in Nepal to musical chairs in Mexico or flying kites in Afghanistan. He filmed in peaceful towns and villages, but also against the backdrop of conflict and tension, such as at a Yezidi refugee camp in Iraq or in besieged Kabul. This book shows the ways children everywhere pass the time and create their own fantasies in games and leisure, whether skipping stones, sandcastles, marbles, or hopscotch. The project is presented here as a series for the first time, with contributions by journalist Lorna Scott Fox, filmmaker David MacDougall, and art critic and curator Cuauhtémoc Medina.

The first multidisciplinary analysis of one of the most impactful and popular contemporary artworks of recent years. In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children's Games, a series of works by artist Francis Alÿs (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Alÿs and his collaborators Félix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children's stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children's Games. It includes an interview with Francis Alÿs and Rafael Ortega, a series of essays by well-known scholars and art critics, curatorial statements, and a logbook related to the presentation of Children's Games at the Venice Biennale of 2022.
