In Loveless, Brussels-based studio Dogma expand on Teige’s dialectical understanding of this type of housing by tracing a history of the minimum dwelling, from monasteries to residential hotels, from kitchenless apartments to contemporary lodgings. Through 50 studies, Dogma’s goal is to provide a genealogy of a contradictory typology which has represented both luxury and poverty, freedom and oppression, solidarity and solitude, emancipation and exploitation. The development of the minimum dwelling runs parallel to the rise of capital and the consequent mobility and precarity of work and life.‘Minimum dwelling’ commonly refers to an extremely reduced space for living, and as such, it is associated with typologies such as the micro-flat, the micro-home, the studio apartment or even a miniature version of the typical family house. This typology was strongly criticised in 1932 by the Czechoslovakian critic and poet Karel Teige in his book Nejmenší byt (The Minimum Dwelling). In opposition to the minimum dwelling as a reduced version of the traditional flat, Teige proposed an alternative: a collective dwelling in which every adult would be provided with a ‘minimal but adequate, independent, habitable room’, while all domestic services such as housekeeping, cooking and childcare would be collectivised. For Teige, the minimum dwelling is not an apartment but a room which is fully supported by shared domestic facilities. Teige was highly influenced by the widespread proliferation of hotel living and workers’ lodgings in major European and American cities between the 19th and 20th century. While Teige acknowledged that these types of living were often determined by the increasing pauperisation and precarity of the working class under capital, he also saw the potential for a new form of life in which domestic labour would be socialised and would thus no longer be the ‘private’ work of the family. His idea of collective dwelling was thus a radical version of these precedents, which he saw as instrumental in changing the habits of dwelling towards an egalitarian society freed from the burdens of family living, domestic labour and private property.

Since 2008, there has been a renewed search for alternative forms of housing production that can move beyond speculative interests and are based instead on models of co-ownership, co-production, and co-management. Hence the concept of the cooperative has experienced a true renaissance in recent years. This book explores how cooperative housing construction and forms of self-determined building production might offer effective solutions to the global housing crisis, moving us closer to a more equitable and sustainable future through systematic change. With case studies from Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Uruguay, Ethiopia, and China, as well as a glossary of important terms.

The presented residential projects in Vienna originated from a desire to develop living concepts that strengthen the sense of community and contribute to a society based on solidarity - building groups and participative projects, neighbourhood homes, temporary or permanent social forms of living and working for marginalised groups such as the homeless. Private homes can be downsized if there are more communal spaces. This reduces the need for land and property and gives the community room for leisure and other opportunities. Ulrike Schartner and Alexander Hagner from gaupenraup+/- explain the starting point and strategies of their work. Robert Temel and Isabella Marboe present the development of communal forms of building and living based on important precursors and trends.

Wood is simply a clever material in a climate crisis. But that is not everything. Wood is also a living material and so are we – and there is a special relationship between the human body and the material. While technological developments make this low-tech material the most digitalised and energy efficient to build with, wood’s naturally smart properties offer healthy interiors, low-maintenance exteriors, and spaces for happy lives.Wood encompasses nine recent, wood-based projects by the renowned Danish architecture studio Vandkunsten Architects, who has shaped the contemporary use of wood in Nordic architecture for over five decades. Projects include the flexible housing at Lisbjerg Bakke, the Arctic House in Greenland, and Senior cohousing at Diakonissestiftelsen.

This edition begins with a conversation with Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara, the founders of Dogma, an architectural firm concerned with the relationship between architecture and the city. By focusing mostly on urban design and large-scale projects, they offer consultancies to municipalities and agencies for urban planning and architectural issues. Each section delves into their solutions, including a model for a city of 4,000,000 inhabitants, a proposal for 44 social housing units, a short history of minimum dwelling, a prototype for boarding houses in London, and a genealogy of housing for the labouring classes, among many other timely articles about urban transformation.
