Steve Allen, an entertainer, was the victim of two extortion attempts investigated by the FBI. The first extortion attempt consisted of a letter sent to the CBS network in New York demanding that the writer be given $30,000 or Mr. Allen would be harmed. Prosecution was declined by the United States Attorney. In the second extortion attempt, the writer accused Mr. Allen of being a communist and threatened to shoot him. The name of the person whose signature was on the letter was interviewed, but he could not read or write English; consequently, it was determined that the signature on the letter was forged. Additional letters were received, but no subjects were ever identified in this investigation.
