La Vita di Sant'Alessio del poeta milanese Bonvesin da la Riva ci è conservata in forma completa in un solo codice della fine del Trecento, che oggi si trova nella Biblioteca Trivulziana (Triv 93). Gli editori anteriori, Gianfranco Contini e Adnan Gökçen, ritraducono il testo del manoscritto Trivulziano nella veste del più antico codice Berlinese, per avvicinarlo cos , in base ad una complessa ipotesi metrica e fonologica, alla presunta forma linguistica dell'originale duecentesco. Il risultato di una tale ricostruzione deve dirsi poco soddisfacente, almeno dal punto di vista storico-linguistico. Il presente lavoro fornisce, per la prima volta, un'edizione interpretativa di questo importante testimone del lombardo antico. L'introduzione, il commento e l'indice completo delle voci e delle forme permettono la puntuale comprensione del testo e ne evidenziano l'interesse storico-linguistico. Al centro dell'attenzione sta qui, a differenza di molti lavori simili anche recenti, non l'ambito fonologico, ma la morfologia e la sintassi. In modo particolare viene sottolineata la stretta interdipendenza tra filologia testuale e sintassi storica. Le osservazioni sulla tecnica narrativa di Bonvesin e sulla sua prassi come traduttore, che aprono l'introduzione, ci portano per di più a riconoscere nell'autore della Vita di Sant'Alessio uno dei primi grandi narratori in un volgare italico, e ad attribuirgli cos , a scapito di un pregiudizio negativo profondamente ancorato, un ruolo non secondario nel panorama letterario dell'Italia medievale.

Il était urgent de consacrer une réflexion neuve au Rythme latin sur saint Alexis, dont l’auteur a abrégé un texte proche de BHL 292, soit une Vie latine qui circulait dans la région austro-bavaroise. On sait que le Rythme et la Vie française de saint Alexis ont plusieurs points en commun, dont la disparition du nom d’Edesse au profit d’Alsis. Comme les documents historiques ne mentionnent cette ville arménienne qu’à partir de 1112-1114 au plus tôt, c’est après cette date que les deux poèmes ont dû être composés. Par ailleurs la relation très étroite entre le prologue du Rythme et le début d’un poème carolingien, les versus de Ioseph, nous amène à conclure que le Rythme précède le poème vernaculaire, duquel il faudra par conséquence abaisser la datation. D’autres chapitres portent sur l’archétype grec à l’origine de la plupart des Vies grecques et latines connues ainsi que sur l’identité syriaque d’Alexis. Grâce à l’activité de personnages tels que Léon IX, Otloh de St. Emmeram, et Gerhoch de Reichersberg, au XIIe siècle saint Alexis a été intégré de plein droit au sanctoral de la réforme bénédictine émanant de l’abbaye d’Hirsau.
