Abstract

Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Automated People Movers and Transit Systems, held in Paris, France, May 22-25, 2011. Sponsored by the Transportation and Development Institute of ASCE. These papers are available only in digital form and can be downloaded at no charge. This proceedings consists of 46 papers on automated people movers and automated transit systems that present the latest technological advances, projects, and planning. Although the full automation of automated people movers originated at airports and activity centers, it is currently being applied to increasing numbers of major urban transit systems. Some 14 papers in this proceedings are directly related to new automated urban systems or the upgrading of older manual systems. Topics include: airports; major activity centers; new systems; policies, planning, and perspectives; system improvements; policy and perspectives for areas with fully automated metros; and urban metro applications.

Abstract

Prepared for American Society of Civil Engineers by Economic Development Research Group, Inc. Each report in the Failure to Act series provides an objective analysis of the economic implications for the United States of its continued underinvestment in infrastructure. Reports in the series assess the implications of present trends in infrastructure investment for the productivity of industries, national competitiveness, and the costs for households. Analysis considers both the building of new infrastructure to meet increasing population and expanded economic activity, and the maintenance or rebuilding of existing infrastructure that needs repair or replacement. This report focuses on airports, inland waterways, and marine ports, which are critical to the health of the U.S. economy, enabling the importing and exporting of goods, as well as global business travel. Topics include: an introduction; overview of airports, inland waterways, and marine ports; the potential investment gap; costs incurred by a failure to invest; economic impacts; and conclusions.

Abstract

Sponsored by the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE; Port and Airport Research Institute of Japan. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake rumbled off the east coast of Japan, followed by a tsunami that generated waves more than 18 meters high. The earthquake and tsunami caused devastation throughout the Tohoku and Sendai regions of Japan, killing nearly 16,000 people and causing damage estimated at more than US

Abstract

Airfield Safety and Capacity Improvements: Case Studies on Successful Projects presents six case studies focused on the planning, engineering, and management of major construction projects at active airports. The construction or reconstruction of runways, aprons, ramps, or terminals while an airport is open for regular operations poses complex challenges, such as access to and from airport operating areas, logistics, staging, short-term lighting and signage, airline-airport communications, and staging and planning for short-term closures of taxiways and taxi lanes. Each case study describes the requirements, objectives, challenges, methodologies, and lessons learned from a recent project, offering unique insights into how complex projects can be managed successfully. Topics include the following: New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport runway design and construction; Seattle-Tacoma International Airport reconstruction of runway 16L-34R; George Bush Intercontinental Airport rehabilitation of runway 09-27; John F. Kennedy International Airport reconstruction of runway 13R-31L; Los Angeles International Airport coordinated logistics management; and Denver International Airport off-peak construction. These case studies are essential reading for those involved in planning, designing, and constructing capital improvements to airport facilities, including transportation and aviation engineers, construction engineers and project managers, and managers with airport authorities.
