Abstract

This book, based on the selected presentations given at the COST728 workshop, is concerned with the following main topics/chapters: 1. Urban morphology and databases, 2. Parameterisations of urban canopy, 3. Strategy for urbanization of different types of models, 4. Evaluation and city case studies / field studies. The chapters were concerned with dynamic (on wind and turbulent) and thermal effects (on temperature and energy in general). The final chapter of this volume summarizes the discussion and conclusions from the four main topics and provides recommendations and future requirements. The book is oriented towards numerical weather prediction and air quality modelling communities.

Abstract

This book is intended to serve as a comprehensive source for the advancements and contributions made in environmental transformation and transport modeling in general and the associated health risk assessment topics in particular. The selection of the title, “Environmental Modeling and Health Risk Analysis” stems from an ambitious objective of providing a review of air, surface water and groundwater quality modeling topics and linking these models with exposure and health risk analysis. Thus, the purpose is to provide the reader with an integrated perspective on these two seemingly distant fields. The ACTS and RISK software that is an integral part of this book include computational platforms for all models discussed in the book. Using these two software tools, available from http://extras.springer.com/, the models described in the book can be readily accessed and used in classroom or professional applications as demonstrated in the book.

Abstract

Various environmental issues are related to urban activities. Through the growing recognition of the necessity to develop sustainable urban mana- ment, the University of Tokyo established the Center for Sustainable Urban Regeneration (cSUR) in July 2003. A research program at the cSUR was designed to create an integrated approach and to provide knowledge for s- tainable urban regeneration with the aid of a global network of researchers and professionals, and to coordinate the international research alliance made up of leading academic institutions worldwide. As part of the program, several studies have been conducted focusing on urban environmental problems in Asian megacities such as Tokyo, Taipei, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Bangkok. The following topics in particular were selected for integrated and strategic research supported by researchers from the fields of architecture, civil engineering, and environmental engineering: –Integrated analysis of the urban atmospheric environment and its re- tionship with control of indoor air conditions in East and Southeast Asian countries –Dynamic behavior of urban non-point pollutants in coastal envir- ments The research contains interesting intensive field-monitoring data on the coastal environment and the urban air environment. Topics also include state-of-the-art environmental monitoring and simulation analysis in urban areas. Key aspects of the research in advanced monitoring and the appli- tion of environmental numerical simulation were selected for inclusion in this book. Integrating the monitoring and modeling of urban environments is essential for engineers to identify and investigate environmental problems and their solutions.

Abstract

Environmental pollution by harmful anthropogenic substances and uncontrolled use of natural reserves have become a global problem and require substantial efforts for developing and applying efficient measures of control, mitigation and abatement. For achieving this goal predictions of possibly resulting risks and impacts are urgently needed for future environmental planning. The majority of environmental quality models is focusing on selected isolated parts of the geo-system though impacts on one compartment usually also affect one or more other parts. There is a strong need to advance to an integral treatment of air, soil and water pollution by combining different models for different media. Furthermore it is imperative to develop and apply modern methods of control theory to environmental risk assessment in order to support mitigation and abatement measures in an optimal way. The aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Air, Water and Soil Quality Modelling for Risk and Impact Assessment" was to further joint environmental compartment modelling and applications of control theory to environmental management. The articles of the proceedings provide an overview of ongoing research in this field regarding assessment of environmental risks and impacts. Besides selected issues of practical application they address questions of forward and inverse modelling, integrated treatment of environmental changes and economic impacts as well as aspects of future development of numerical environmental modelling.
