Dans la deuxième évangélisation de l’Éthiopie, qui suivit la restauration des souverains salomonides, la province septentrionale du Tigré occupa une place prépondérante; le Wāldebbā, district aride et désolé de cette région, est célèbre par sa vie monastique intense (toujours florissante de nos jours). Le plus connu de ses anachorètes fut Samuel, « l’ami des bêtes sauvages » ; en plus d’être remarquablement versé dans l’exégèse sacrée, ce saint personnage vécut en effet toute sa vie dans la familiarité des lions, des léopards et des éléphants. Une carrière aussi singulière et éclatante fut narrée, dès après la mort de Samuel, par une Vie (gadl) haute en couleurs. Un demi-siècle plus tard, environ l’an 1500, elle fut définitivement enrichie d’une série de 70 miracles qui fait de l’œuvre une des plus riches de l’hagiographie éthiopienne. L’édition du gadl et des Miracles est fondée sur l’unique manuscrit, encore conservé dans le monastère du saint, qui renferme la totalité du texte.

Peu après l’Empire romain, l’Éthiopie adopte à son tour le christianisme. Réduite d’abord à l’entourage royal et au milieu dirigeant, la christianisation touche bientôt en profondeur tout le Nord éthiopien, grâce à l’œuvre missionnaire conduite à partir du milieu du ve siècle par des moines venus de l’Empire. Frumentius est l’artisan de la conversion royale ; les faits n’ont pas laissé de récit indigène et c’est Rufin d’Aquilée qui en fournit en latin la relation originale. La tradition écrite éthiopienne la recopia et l’enrichit, conférant à Frumentius sa qualité de premier saint – et métropolite – du pays des négus. Garimā est un des principaux missionnaires du ve siècle et partage avec eux beaucoup de traits : fils d’un roi étranger, il obéit à l’appel de Dieu, renonce aux grandeurs terrestres, se retire et fonde un monastère. Takla Hāymānot est un des acteurs, au xive siècle, d’une deuxième christianisation, qui touche le Sud du pays. Au cours de ses voyages, le saint engendre de nombreux fils spirituels et crée le plus important ordre monastique éthiopien. Le monastère qu’il fonda, Dabra-Libānos, fournissait le chef suprême de tous les moines. Ēwostātēwos donna son nom à l’ordre éthiopien des Eustathéens, surtout présent dans le nord de l’Éthiopie et l’actuelle Érythrée. Il a défendu l’observance du « sabbat » du samedi à l’égal du dimanche. Les Actes de ces fondateurs ont, pour la plupart, été publiés en ge᾿ez il y a un siècle ou plus. Certains n’avaient jamais été traduits, d’autres l’avaient été partiellement – notamment en latin – lors de leur publication.
