Abstract

Aeromicrobiology provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the microbial communities and toxins collectively called bioaerosols that can be found in air. It provides information on the basics of Aeromicrobiology, the fate and transport of microorganisms in air, and the fundamental differences between intramural and extramural Aeromicrobiology. Leaning heavily on the current state of science, detailed information on the sampling and analysis of bioaerosol samples is provided. Subsequent chapters comprehensively discuss various airborne microbial groups and toxins, while the final chapter is dedicated to bioaerosol control strategies, biosafety, and biosecurity. There are limited resources on Aeromicrobiology. In rare instances where there are resources on Aeromicrobiology, they are often restricted to chapters in books or even supplementary materials. The emergence of new airborne pathogens, the aerosolization of microorganisms hitherto believed not to be airborne, and the proliferation of technologies for sampling, analysis, and control of bioaerosols makes it imperative for this title, which streamlines and succinctly presents the new body of knowledge in the field.

Abstract

Fundamentals of Bioaerosols Science: From Physical to Biological Dimensions of Airborne Biological Particles covers both the physical and biological aspects of bioaerosol science. It is assumed that researchers with a physics background are often unfamiliar with the biological aspects (e.g., molecular biology, PCR, and DNA sequencing), and researchers with a biology background are often unfamiliar with the physical aspects (e.g., aerosol physics, air sampling, and aerodynamic diameter) of bioaerosol science. This book aims to bridge the interdisciplinary gap between the fields of bioaerosol science. Fundamentals of Bioaerosols Science include topics such as bioaerosol physical properties, sampling and monitoring methods, analytical methods, control techniques, and relationship to climate.

Abstract

The Air Spora is an illustrated guide to trapping, identifying and quantifying airborne biological particles such as fungus and plant spores and pollen. This book will be of use to anyone interested in aerobiology or studying applied aspects such as dispersal and effect of allergens, or human, animal and plant pathogens. Including a comprehensive review of what is in the air and detailing the historical development of theories leading to modern aerobiology, the book explains the fundamental processes behind airborne dispersal and techniques used to sample, identify and quantify biological particles. Methods are explained in a step-by-step guide for the use of standard air sampling devices. Although formats applicable to modern molecular and immunological techniques are described, the emphasis of the book is on simple visual identification of particles in air samples using traditional microscopy. Consequently a chapter on setting-up and using a light microscope is included, although experienced researchers can skip to chapters showing photographs of examples of the Air Spora and nine colour plates of paintings of airborne particles at a magnification of x1000. "I recommend this book to those actively running or thinking of running a pollen and spore trapping program. It will also be of value to doctors, allergists, and those teaching the basics of palynology, wishing to include a lecture or two on air spora." David M. Jarzen, Florida Museum of Natural History In: The Newsletter of the American Association Of Stratigraphic Palynologists, 2007(40:2).
