Le sociologue retrace l'histoire de la publicité commerciale à la télévision française depuis son introduction le 1er octobre 1968 jusqu'à l'annonce de sa suppression sur les chaines publiques le 8 janvier 2008. A travers elle, il met en lumière les transformations des normes de la publicité télévisée (thèmes, formes d'argumentation, etc.), sa réception et ses liens avec les spectateurs.
