Mirroring Effects analyses prevalent political and economic practices concerning environment-making in the contemporary world. Written as real-life tales, the presented case studies explore the relationship between urbanization processes and capitalism. Taken together, the tales narrate the ongoing restructuring of built and lived spaces in highly diverse regions of what are generally referred to as the Global South and the Global North. Whereas the two parts of this volume are divided along this political and economic equator, the stories blur that very distinction, making it clear that the expansion of the free market has entangled developed as well as developing regions to the extent that such dichotomies no longer hold. The essays chart the course of capital-led development in settings such as Addis Ababa, Mumbai, Cairo, São Paulo, Dubai, Berlin, Paris, and Shanghai. This particular itinerary traces the changes that have taken place on the ground, physically and socially, and offers glimpses of where our geo-economic order is heading and what conditions will most likely ensue, for better or worse, given prevalent modes of territorial production. The stories told, if casually overheard, could just as easily be misconstrued as the stuff of incredible fables. But real they are.

The Act of Living explores the relation between development and marginality in Ethiopia, one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Replete with richly depicted characters and multi-layered narratives on history, everyday life and visions of the future, Marco Di Nunzio's ethnography of hustling and street life is an investigation of what is to live, hope and act in the face of the failing promises of development and change. Di Nunzio follows the life trajectories of two men, "Haile" and "Ibrahim," as they grow up in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, enter street life to get by, and turn to the city's expanding economies of work and entrepreneurship to search for a better life. Apparently favourable circumstances of development have not helped them achieve social improvement. As their condition of marginality endures, the two men embark in restless attempts to transform living into a site for hope and possibility.By narrating Haile and Ibrahim's lives, The Act of Living explores how and why development continues to fail the poor, how marginality is understood and acted upon in a time of promise, and why poor people's claims for open-endedness can lead to better and more just alternative futures. Tying together anthropology, African studies, political science, and urban studies, Di Nunzio takes readers on a bold exploration of the meaning of existence, hope, marginality, and street life.

This full-scale retrospective monograph of Julie Mehretu's work traces the development of one of America's most celebrated abstract painters. Over the past twenty-five years Julie Mehretu has emerged as a major force in American art. Known mostly for her enormous abstract paintings, she also produces exquisite drawings, often created as studies for larger works. This sumptuous volume accompanies a major mid-career survey of Mehretu's work. Designed to allow close viewing of Mehretu's vast canvases, it features lush reproductions of her paintings in their entirety, as well as numerous full-page details. The genesis for much of Mehretu's work lies in the black ink drawings she created in the late 1990s. From these early drawings and paintings, Mehretu moved onto large-scale canvases. These drawings and paintings are maplike and colorful, with diagrammatic elements that reflect her life experience. Each of these stages of her oeuvre is represented here, including works from her landmark exhibition Drawing into Painting, the twelve-panel intaglio, Auguries, and the paintings she created as a result of time spent in Africa and the Middle East. Accompanying these images are numerous essays by leading curators, scholars, and writers. Long overdue, this magnificent volume pays tribute to an artist whose work and process intermingle in a unique and important examination of painting, history, geopolitics, and displacement.
