Surface modification of biomaterials can ultimately determine whether a material is accepted or rejected from the human body, and a responsive surface can further make the material ""smart"" and ""intelligent"". Switchable and Responsive Surfaces and Materials for Biomedical Applications outlines synthetic and biological materials that are responsive under different stimuli, their surface design and modification techniques, and applicability in regenerative medicine/tissue engineering, drug delivery, medical devices, and biomedical diagnostics. Part one provides a detailed overview of swit

"Smart Materials in Additive Manufacturing, Volume 1 provides readers with an overview of the current smart materials widely in use and the techniques for additively manufacturing them. It demonstrates the principles developed for 4D printing in a way that is useful for students, early career researchers, and professionals. Topics covered include modeling and fabrication of 4D printed materials such as dielectric elastomer soft robots, low-voltage electroactive polymers, and stimuli-responsive hydrogels. 4D printing of light-responsive structures, gels and soft materials, and natural fiber composites are also discussed, as is origami-inspired 4D printing, 4D microprinting, and reversible 4D printing. 4D bioprinting and related biomedical applications are outlined as well as functionalized 4D printed sensor systems."--

This book develops and details rigorous design methodologies and performance measures for the control of modern Smart Structures. The spatially distributed/continuum or distributed parameter nature of such structures makes it difficult to apply modern lumped parameter control philosophy and techniques to such designs. While there exist a substantial amount of technical literature on the Control of Distributed Parameter Systems (DPS), there are still relatively few applications or practical implementations of the theory. The work presented in this textbook address the issue of the design and implementation of distributed parameter control schemes, for Smart Structures, which exploit both spatially distributed sensing and actuation through the use of modern smart material technology. The merging of DPS with distributed parameter transducers leads to simple, physically realizable control system designs. This text provides a significant reference for practicing professionals, students and researchers in the area of transducer design using smart materials for high performance smart structures.
