Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie stellt mit ihrer Forderung, die Verflechtungen zwischen Natur und Kultur, Gesellschaft und Technik strikt empirisch zu erforschen, eine Herausforderung für sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Konzeptionen des Sozialen dar. Entfaltet wird eine kritische Diskussion um Symmetrie, die Handlungsfähigkeit nicht-menschlicher Akteure sowie die Verteilung von Macht in Netzwerken. Dabei werden Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie in den Blick genommen: am Beispiel der Handlungsmächtigkeit von Viren, der Verflechtung unterschiedlicher Akteure im Prozess künstlerischer Produktion sowie der Problematik des Regierens nach Hurrikan »Katrina«. Das Hauptinteresse gilt dabei den Mechanismen ungeplanter Strukturentstehung.

In this book, Richardson's research spans a decade and two cities - Sydney, Australia and Montreal, Canada - focusing on three metro-style rail infrastructure case study projects: one ongoing, one failed and one upgraded after reaching fifty years of age - to build an irrefutable case that the news media is highly influential to policy, and that these influences are complex, messy and changing. News Media Influence on Rail Infrastructure Policy offers scholars and industry practitioners in the arenas of policy analysis, politics and media communications a method for astutely guiding large-scale projects through the complex and changing landscape of 24/7 news media. It is underpinned by empirical research that identifies and endeavors to close a considerable gap in current understanding and practice. This gap represents a failure to recognise and respect mediatization - the many powerful influences impacting a policy arena that has drawn the ire of the news media. The result of this failure is ineffective communication that does little to advance the policy piece and, in the worst instances, leads to policy immobilisation or poor policy decision-making. Drawing significantly on Actor­-Network Theory, Richardson identifies the influential actors and alliances at play when policy is subjected to media discourse, and he proposes a framework for tracing and managing them. In doing so, he demonstrates that such a framework is not only vital for the successful negotiation of policy and projects in the media, but also to an (r)evolutionary recasting of public, expert and media actors in the development and decision-making process.

Inspiriert von den Laborstudien der Science & Technology Studies ging das Autor*innen-Kollektiv des vorliegenden Buchs diesen Fragen nach. Eco-territorialism focuses its proposal on the relationship between environmental issues and the territory. For sociology, this is a partly unprecedented challenge. Indeed, environmental sociology has never taken an explicit territorial posture, while territorial sociology has always considered the environment a physical extension that frames human actions. An eco-territorialist sociology, on the other hand, must focus on the logic of ecosystems interacting with society, looking at environmental crises place by place. In the chapter, three sociological perspectives are identified in order to recompose them in an eco-territorial key: Latour and Callon's Actor Network Theory, which reincorporates biophysical worlds and artefacts into agency; Ploeg's rural sociology, which looks at the co-evolution between social and ecological systems; Gough's eco-welfare, which points to a new welfare paradigm capable of sustaining itself outside of growth.

This book employs actor-network theory (ANT) to explore the making of the English translation of a work of Chinese canonical fiction, Journey to the West, demonstrating how ANT, as applied to Translation Studies, can contribute to a richer understanding of the translation process. The volume builds on previous research to apply ANT theory to translation studies by looking in-depth at a single work, highlighting the unique factors underpinning the making of Monkey, Arthur Waley's English translation of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, which make the work an ideal candidate for showing ANT theory in practice in translation. Luo uses an in-depth exploration of the work to examine the ways in which both human and nonhuman translation actors and agents interact in different ways in the publication of this translation, showcasing them as dynamic, changing, and active participants whose roles shifted over the course of the translation process, rather than as fixed entities as traditionally categorized in existing research. The book moves beyond a descriptive account of an ANT-based case study toward offering a systematic theoretical and methodological framework of ANT-based translation studies, using the conclusions drawn from its application to a single work to suggest a way forward for applying ANT in translation production on a wider scale. This book will be of interest to scholars in translation studies, sociology, and comparative literature, particularly those interested in actor-network theory or network studies and their application to related disciplinary fields.
