Abstract

"Authored by pioneers in the field, the Atlas of Acoustic Neurinoma Microsurgery--now in a fully updated second edition--provides step-by-step descriptions of the various surgical approaches complemented by clearly labeled, full-color intraoperative photographs. Numerous cases derived from the expert authors' own experience accompany each description to demonstrate the clinical application of the various techniques as well as to offer practical examples of what to do when faced with surgical complications. Concise, tightly focused chapters cover everything from surgical anatomy and operating room setup to detailed explanations of how to perform the full range of surgical procedures, including the enlarged translabyrinthine approach with transapical extension (introduced by Gruppo Otologico), the enlarged middle cranial fossa approach, the transotic approach, the modified transcochlear approach, and much more. Features - New chapters on the general features of acoustic neurinomas; functional surgery and intraoperative monitoring of the facial and cochlear nerves; imaging of acoustic neurinomas; facial nerve reanimation; and treatment options for patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 - In-depth information on key aspects of patient care, such as patient selection, preoperative care, and postoperative follow-up - Over 1000 high-quality images--including more than 900 full-color intraoperative photographs-- precisely display each step of the different procedures - Multiple cases in each chapter prepare the reader for clinical situations Reflecting the latest advancements in acoustic neurinoma microsurgery, this visual guide will help develop the surgical skills of every otolaryngologist and neurosurgeon who performs this delicate and complicated form of surgery"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Although a histologically benign and relatively uncommon tumor, otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons have maintained a lasting and deep-rooted fascination with vestibular schwannoma, also known as acoustic neuroma. Advancements in microsurgical technique, radiosurgery, and radiotherapy, coupled with an increased understanding of the natural history of the disease, have made modern management of this tumor considerably more complex. Concurrently, new controversies have added to the original debates among pioneering surgeons, with the pendulum swinging between conservatism and definitive cure. Comprehensive Management of Vestibular Schwannoma, by distinguished Mayo Clinic clinicians and renowned international contributors, is a comprehensive textbook covering all the clinical aspects of vestibular schwannoma management. Eighty-four chapters written by multidisciplinary experts including otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and audiologists, ensure a balanced view of all treatment modalities for sporadic and neurofibromatosis type 2-associated vestibular schwannoma.

Abstract

This volume of the Keio University International Symposia for LifeSciences and Medicine contains the proceedings of the eleventh symposium held under the sponsorship of the Keio University Medical Science Fund. As explained in the Opening Remarks by the President of Keio University, the fund was established by the generous donation of Dr. Mitsunada Sakaguchi. The Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine constitute one of the core activities sponsored by the fund, the objective of which is to contribute to the international community by developing human resources, promoting scientific knowledge, and encouraging mutual exchange. Each year, the Committee of the International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine selects the most significant symposium topic from applications received from the Keio medical community. The publication of the proceedings is intended to publicize and disseminate the information arising from the lively discussions of the most exciting and current issues presented during the symposium. On behalf of the Committee, I am most grateful to Dr. Mitsunada Sakaguchi, who made the symposia series possible. Weare also grateful to the prominent speakers for their contribution to this volume. In addition, wewould liketo acknowledge the efficientorganizational work performed by the members of the program committee and the staff of the fund. Naoki Aikawa,M.D.,D.M.Sc., EA.C.S.

Abstract

This seventh volume of the essential series covering practices and developments relating to CNS tumors zeroes in on those found in the brain. Detailed dossiers on meningioma and schwannoma tumors cover aspects including diagnosis, therapy and prognosis. The text delivers vital insights into the molecular pathways related to brain tumor biology, including a detailed analysis of the roles played in neoplasm formation by E-cadherin gene instability, carbonic anhydrase 11, urokinase plasminogen activator, and Wnt signaling. Further research into their influence in the process could prompt the development of effective anti-cancer drugs.   The contributions also show how perfusion magnetic resonance imaging helps physicians differentiate between subtypes of meningiomas, and analyze the influence of molecular genetics and epigenetic mechanisms on schwannoma tumors. Among the diagnostic processes outlined are those for recognizing incidentally discovered meningioma, cystic papillary meningioma, facial nerve schwannoma, vestibular schwannoma, and intermediate nerve schwannoma. This book presents treatments for atypical, oncocytic, intracranial, and cavernous meningiomas, as well as guides to therapeutic methods ranging from neurosurgery and gamma-knife radiosurgery to vestibular schwannoma interventions such as retrosigmoidal craniotomy and immunotherapy. This authoritative volume once again provides invaluable and tightly focused source material for medical professionals committed to placing the latest theories and techniques at the service of those they care for.
