Since the early 1970's, Marina Abramovic has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form, exploring her physical and emotional limits in some of the most iconic works in contemporary art. Her body is her primary subject and medium, from the early sound-based performances in her native Yugoslavia, to her collaborative works with German artists Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen), her videos exploring her Balkan heritage, and most recently her re-enactments of hisorical performaces by fellow artists such as Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman and Valie Export.

Marina Abramović fascinates her international audience with performances, films and, most recently, her opera project 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. Following in the tradition of European mysticism, over the past five decades this pioneer of performance art has developed an undogmatic individual approach to the transcendent that expands the religious traditions by adding elements of shamanism, alchemy and Buddhism. The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Tübingen curated by Nicole Fritz in close collaboration with Marina Abramović and her studio is the first to be devoted to the spiritual aspects of the artist's work by means of a selection of her major works. The accompanying catalogue brings together interdisciplinary essays, authored by a range of subject experts, which provide new insights into the artist's work. Exhibition: Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany (24.07.2021 - 13.02.2022).

At once radical, controversial and revered, Marina Abramovic (*1946 in Belgrade, Serbia) is one of the most discussed artists today. Famous for her groundbreaking performance works, she continues to expand the boundaries of art. The publication accompanying her first major retrospective in Europe gives an extensive overview of her work from the earliest years until today: film, photography, paintings and objects, installations and archival material. Since the early 1970s Marina Abramovic explores the intersection between performing and visual art in her work and, though rarely overtly political, poses questions of power and hierarchy. In addressing fundamental issues of our existence and seeking the core of notions like loss, memory, pain, endurance, and trust, she both provokes and moves us.
