Abstract

Galaxy morphology is a long-standing subfield of astronomy, moving from visual qualifications to quantitative morphometrics. This book covers the descriptions developed by astronomers to describe the appearance of galaxies, primarily in optical, ultraviolet and near-infrared wavelengths.

Abstract

This book provides an introduction to our current knowledge of stellar magnetic activity. It is intended for graduate or advanced undergraduate students or researchers new to the field. Starting with the Sun, it extends to stars of all masses and ages. Topics include the production and measurement of the fields themselves, their effects on the stellar atmospheres, the diagnostics we use to understand them, and the effects of the magnetic activity on the star and its surrounds over time.

Abstract

Almost all galaxies host in their center a supermassive black hole of mass between a million and tens of billions solar masses. Supermassive black holes grow in symbiosis with their host galaxies across the Hubble time, occasionally accreting surround matter, giving rise to an Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This book gives a general review of our current knowledge of AGN, powered by supermassive black holes: how they are fueled by gas (or stars) and what problems are encountered; how can we account for the wide variety of AGN, from Seyfert/Liners to quasars, and for the two types (AGN 1 and 2) either through dust obscuration, and geometrical orientation arguments, or through intrinsic activity difference, qualitative or quantitative.

Abstract

This book explores the biggest gaps in current research of the universe. The text covers topics such as dark matter, dark energy, the Hubble constant/tension, deaths of massive stars, mysteries associated with black holes, neutron stars, and binary/ multiple systems. Written at a general and accessible level, each chapter also contains separate panel inserts with more technical explanations, as well as references for further details. As a highly useful reference book it provides a summary of where mysteries in the universe lie and exciting new avenues of future research. The text fills an important gap in current scientific literature and appeals to general audiences, astronomy students, and scientists in other disciplines.
