Het stilleven neemt een prominente plaats in tussen de picturale genres van de Westerse beeldende kunst, maar wordt te vaak bekeken als een academische oefening in imitatio. Deze ambitieuze, originele tentoonstelling zet die perceptie op z’n kop met een overzicht van 400 jaar Spaanse stillevens. 

Het Spaanse stilleven neemt een unieke plaats in binnen de Europese context, met een onmiskenbare verwantschap met Vlaamse en Italiaanse modellen, maar een resoluut eigen beeldtaal, ontwikkelt door Sanchez Cotán en zijn tijdgenoten. Het genre kent een ongeziene vlucht in de late barok om in de twintigste eeuw plots een echt strijdperk voor de kunsten te worden. De avant-garde vindt in het stilleven namelijk een uniek middel voor een nieuw experiment: het kubisme. 

Deze tentoonstelling brengt de grote Spaanse meesters samen om deze adembenemende reis te illustreren, van Velázquez en Goya tot Picasso, Dali en Miró.

How did a chance meeting on Unter den Linden make the young owner of The Red Book famous? Was it true that no one ever saw Picasso with a book in his hand? And why were the Cumberland girls reading The Fashionable Lover in Romney's commissioned portrait? Thousands of fine paintings include books in their subject matter. This companionable survey first asks 'what is a book?'; it explores the symbiotic relationship between the development of books and the emergence of our modern idea of the role of the artist; it parades and interprets the work of many of the greatest artists of the last five hundred years; and it explains how and why books became the single most ubiquitous feature of our cultural lives and, in large measure, of our everyday existence. These paintings connect us with centuries of lived experience: religious systems, symbols of all kinds, education, changing patterns of transport, gender roles, social status, romance, the imagination of children, literary life, sex, friendship, civilized bathing, professional competence, scientific discovery, aids to rest, aids to reflection, danger ... books tell us about ourselves, and have earned their place in life - and art - through the ages.

Billet, pièce de monnaie, lettre de change, carte de crédit, action boursière, lingot peints, en marbre, porcelaine, bois doré, acier ou encore flottants dans un aquarium : la représentation de l'argent est omniprésente dans les oeuvres d'art. Le présent ouvrage l'étudie dans le long terme, depuis la résurgence de la monnaie métallique à la fin du Moyen Age jusqu'à la fin actuelle, en envisageant l'Occident l'Europe tout d'abord, puis l'Amérique quand celle-ci, conquise et modernisée, se convertit au numéraire. Durant ces siècles, la situation démographique, économique, sociale, technologique, fiduciaire change : la peinture se modifie au gré des styles et sa place même dans la création n'est plus la même : elle n'est plus aujourd'hui le médium dominant et dès lors sont examinés les installations, la photographie et l'image mouvante - le cinéma ou la vidéo - ainsi que le point de vue des artistes femmes.
