At heart, this spirited survey of rooftop gardens and structural additions is a reference book for architects and designers. And Busch's ( The Photography of Architecture ) strong background in these fields aids her well. She explores sleek penthouses and costly greenhouses--but also rustic retreats and suburban gazebos. Among these ambitious and expensive aeries are projects by I. M. Pei and Frank Gehry, giving the book a definite postmodern slant. Both industrial and residential examples come in for scrutiny. The author gives a nod to architectural internationalism: we glimpse rooftops in Tokyo and Vienna. Each project is described from its original plans to its accomplished ends, as Busch explains how structural problems were overcome. Architectural working drawings and elevations are well represented, complementing stylish photographs of final products. Rooftop Architecture should give the savvy reader both aesthetic and practical guidance.

The land in big cities has be used more intensively, but the possibilities are limited. One of the leading options for the future is the use of the flat roofs of residential buildings and office blocks as a building site. Rooftop buildings can intensify the existing city, inject it with new vitality and break through the monofunctionality of a neighbourhood. So far the exploitation of rooftop space has been incidental. This book analyses and describes the opportunities for realizing projects of this kind, as well as the potential difficulties, using interesting examples of construction on top of existing buildings in the Netherlands and abroad. It will therefore be influential in establishing a benchmark for architecture and urban planning that is a necessity if rooftop architecture is to have a serious future.(http://www.naipublishers.nl/architecture/rooftoparch_e.html)24/11/05

The idea of climbing a tree for shelter, or just to see the earth from another perspective, is surely as old as humanity. Tree houses are chronicled in ancient civilizations and their lore crosses through the history of every part of the world where trees grow. This stunningly-illustrated study offers a tour of the best tree houses in the world, some designed by architects, others the work of unknown craftsmen. A teahouse, a restaurant, a hotel, a playhouse for children, or a perch from which to contemplate life-the tree house can take as many forms as the imagination can offer. In times of concern for sustainability and ecological responsibility, the tree house may also be the ultimate symbol of life in symbiosis with nature. Whether rustic or contemporary in style, tree houses make the most of space. Climb into this trove of tree houses and enjoy a new perspective on the world. 50 tree houses from around the world Covers all different styles, from romantic to modern Every house is depicted in several photos as well as one illustration by artist Patrick Hruby from Los Angeles (who also created the book's cover artwork) Helpful short biographies of all architects Text in English, French, and German

A beautifully illustrated history of these quirky ornamental buildings in gardens across the globe. Are they frivolous or practical? Follies are buildings constructed primarily for decoration, but they suggest another purpose through their appearance. In this visually stunning book, Celia Fisher describes follies in their historical and architectural context, looks at their social and political significance, and highlights their relevance today. She explores follies built in protest, follies in Oriental and Gothic styles, animal-related follies, waterside follies and grottoes, and, finally, follies in glass and steel. Featuring many fine illustrations, from historical paintings to contemporary photographs and prints, and taking in follies from Great Britain to Ireland, throughout Europe, and beyond, The Story of Follies is an amusing and informative guide to fanciful, charming buildings.
