Abstract

The importance of education in a global economy is undisputed, and in the wake of international assessment studies schools and kindergartens have become the focus of considerable public interest. As a new generation of educational environments are designed and built, this Design Manual helps architects to grasp the underlying educational theories and how they can be realized in built form, so that the building fulfils its role as a 3-dimensional curriculum plan. Over 80 international case studies covering all school types are examined and explained in the context of varying national and cultural education approaches. Among the key themes analyzed are the impact of modern communication technology, acoustic and lighting design, sustainability, internal circulation and outdoor spaces, renovation and adaptation to changing requirements.

Abstract

"Bamboo has been used as building material for many centuries in all regions in which it grows, especially in Asia, Africa and South America. Today it is gaining in popularity also among Western architects and engineers due to its reputation of a quickly replenishing and therefore sustainable raw material. In addition, its tensile as well as compressive strength, which can compete with those of steel, stone and concrete, make bamboo a very desirable construction material. The range extends from traditional building styles and their modern interpretation to the combination of bamboo with other materials. Frequently, beyond its use for purely construction purposes it also serves as a primary design element. This volume presents contemporary projects that show the impressive versatility of its usage"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Drs. M.F. van Klinken

Abstract

Meeting children as equals, on their own level, is not only a question of educational theory. Räume für Kinder shows how architecture and interior design can promote childhood development. Based on historical and current concepts of progressive education, the book sketches design principles for building daycare centers that can also be transferred to other spaces, such as pediatric clinics. Rooms can invite discovery; they can promote communication and social interaction, strengthen self-confidence, and be places of retreat or landscapes for play. For years, the Berlin architectural firm baukind has been creatively balancing the strict legal requirements and architectural possibilities of architecture suitable for children―always with a view to children’s needs. The book presents realized projects, such as the kindergarten Weltenbummler in Berlin, and aims to foster the equal involvement of children in the design of our environment.
