2019 marks the centenary of a myth: the Bauhaus has shaped architectural history like no other modern institution. Even 100 years after its foundation in Weimar, the principles, methods and visions of the Bauhaus masters and students are still alive. But the many ways in which the Bauhaus is regarded today are as diverse as the goals pursued by its individual directors and workshops in the past. What Bauhaus means, the associations it invokes and its typical characteristics are all a matter of interpretation and perspective. There is no universal formula. In this book, 100 architects from around the world share their personal views on the Bauhaus. In short texts accompanied by photos or sketches, they describe what they associate with this avant-garde school, how the Bauhaus is relevant to them personally, and the aspects they consider to be 'typical Bauhaus'. Architecture and design, the everyday and the exemplary, processes and experiments are just a few aspects of the range of topics addressed in these brief essays. 100 individual perspectives provide insight into the authors' design principles and architectural understanding.

Architecture has always been found in a space between its economic and cultural values. As distinct from the intrinsic values attributed to the visual and performing arts, literature and music, architecture's values are often seen to be compromised by, or contingent upon, forces outside of the discipline—on property prices, real estate markets and the vicissitudes of local and global economies. Such intersections of cultural and economic values are especially conspicuous in architectural heritage where conflicts between values are most publicly and passionately contested.Valuing Architecture is not concerned with arguments for or against the cultural value of architecture and heritage per se but, rather, with the different sites and occasions where such values are bestowed, exchanged and come into conflict. It brings together a collection of essays that tackle concrete cases, both historical and contemporary, to explore how the values of architecture intersect, and what is at stake for architecture in the economics of culture.

What was it like to grow up in a Modernist residence? Did these radical environments shape the way that children looked at architecture later in life? The oral history in this book paint a uniquely intimate portrait of Modernism. The authors conducted interviews with people, who spent their childhood in radical Modernist domestic spaces, uncovering both serene and poignant memories. The recollections range from the ambivalence of philosopher Ernst Tugendhat, now 90 years old, who lived in the famous Mies van der Rohe house in Brno (1930) to the fond reminiscing of the youngest daughter of the Schminke family, who still dreams of her Scharoun-designed ship-like villa in Löbau (1933). The book offers a unique, private and often refreshing perspective on these icons of the avant-garde.
