The oceans are rising. On the rise are the metrics of accelerated human activities: sea level, water temperature, acidity, algal blooms, and the depletion of fish communities and marine life. The loss of abundance and diversity has devastating effects on the services the oceans render to the earth, exhausting their unrecognized labor of carbon sequestration, climate resilience, and nutritional offerings. Thinking along a land-sea continuum, how can we fathom the political, aesthetic, and epistemological rise of the oceans from centuries of invisibilization and forgetting? What are the oceans’ own “waves of knowing”? What ideas and memories do the oceans hold in their depth and reanimate in response to the trembling of earth’s ecosystems? How to escape the silos of research and inquiry that narrow and fragment the knowledge of the oceans? Asking new questions and using multiple registers of sensing can lead to a revitalization of the ways humans engage with the oceans at this precarious moment and create new pathways for reparative justice.Oceans Rising is a companion reader to the research exhibition “Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation” commissioned by TBA21–Academy, an independent oceanic art-science initiative operating out of Ocean Space in Venice. The publication gathers forty-one thoughtful and generous contributions by artists, scholars, scientists, and ocean activists in response to the rapidly changing oceans. Writing from places of conflict and concern, the contributors respond to the magnitude and urgency of ecological devastation, and, most importantly, provide a multitude of narratives that strengthen our knowledge communities and commit to world-making practices from an oceanic perspective.

The transition to a post-carbon future is in full swing. Across the globe, fossil fuels are giving way to renewable sources of energy, bringing energy provision closer to our homes than we were used to. The development of new energy landscapes, based on techno-economic choices, often meets with resistance. Is there a better way to bridge the growing gap between urgency and action? What if energy transition is not about technologies? What if, instead, it is one of the driving forces behind a changing living environment, the places where we live, work and recreate? The Power of Landscape explores various energy landscapes in Europe and the US in the past, present and future. The starting point of the book is the meaning that the landscape holds in terms of quality and emotion for its inhabitants and other landscape users. In doing so, it builds a bridge between the world of renewable energy and our living environment for the first time. The book offers a surprising perspective on how landscape can play a more central role in realizing the energy transition in a way that is both sustainable and attractive. The core of the book is the research into the power of landscapes and the ingredients for the new narrative for energy transition at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam by Sven Stremke, Dirk Oudes and Paolo Picchi. The power of landscape is further elaborated in essays from several international experts from the world of energy transition and spatial design.

On the Move is a barometer of landscape architecture in Europe. This publication offers a selection of contemporary projects on the basis of a democratic call for entries, controversial discussions by a European jury of practitioners, and design critiques formulated by the editors. Some landscape architects are on the move, breaking out of the silos of their discipline, sketching new professional profiles, and designing landscapes beyond the architectonic, with natural, economic and social processes being included as part of form and structure. Here are paths along which the profession can move away from outdated habits, conventional aesthetic language and fallacious institutional frameworks. As a result the book raises the awareness of what landscape architecture can contribute to society today. On the Move is the fourth edition in a series of Landscape Architecture Europe. Previously In Touch (2012), On Site (2010) and Fieldwork (2008) were published.

This volume in the series on contemporary landscape architecture is concerned with how life quality can be increased by improving our living environment through planning and raising the quality of public space. How green do we want our housing to be? What are the essential criteria of a successful planning of open space in residential architecture? Will the changed relationship between city and country contribute to that, perhaps in the form of urban agriculture? This book was published on the occasion of the German Landscape Architecture Award 2011, the Special Housing Environment Award, and the largest competition for ideas from students and young professionals in landscape architecture and open space planning: the Peter Joseph Lenné Award. With a revised design and reworked structure, the essays and project descriptions in the book reveal the strategies with which the profession is meeting new challenges.

"Modernity was critically important to the formation and evolution of landscape architecture, yet its histories in the discipline are still being written. This book looks closely at the work and influences of some of the least studied figures of the era: established and less well-known female landscape architects who pursued modernist ideals in their designs. The women discussed in this volume belong to the pioneering first two generations of professional landscape architects and were outstanding in the field. They not only developed notable practices but some also became leaders in landscape architectural education as the first professors in the discipline, or prolific lecturers and authors ... The book is ideal reading for those studying landscape history, women's studies, and cultural geography".

Will we manage, by the end of this decade, to get the tools and techniques in place that the scientists believe are our last chance to secure a habitable environment? This sixth edition of the book series Landscape Architecture Europe presents and reflects on 63 contemporary projects, selected by a practitioners’ jury, out of over 200 entries from all over Europe. The selected projects are groundbreaking: some for their innovative ways of tackling sustainability, others for their political stance concerning concepts such as nature and democracy. They demonstrate the ability of landscape architects to come up with convincing conceptual and physical answers to burning questions - by responding sensitively to sites and their various life forms, and by translating abstract sustainability ideas into spatial solutions. This richly illustrated book offers thought-provoking texts in support of four landscape architectural approaches to the challenges of the 21st century.
