Abstract

In summer 2019, artist Eva Le Roi and architect Pierre Burquel travelled to São Paulo to research its particular urban conditions. Five subjective axonometric drawings on a 1:1000 scale ensued: Telhados, Piscinões, Condomínios, Campos and Galerias. Their project proposes to examine through drawings the specific urban conditions of a city (São Paulo), where rapid growth and the overlap of multiple, even contradictory, dynamics have resulted in the creation of powerful urban landscapes. The staggering growth of São Paulo and accumulation of what are often contradictory urban dynamics have created a complex urban landscape. Rather than an exhaustive study of this metropolitan environment, their project provides a narrative vision of five particular situations in the city of São Paulo. Each situation is described with a diptych of complementary visuals. On the one hand, an axonometry which, using processes of selection, framing, isolation and compilation, offers a new perspective and reveals specific aspects of the location. On the other hand, an image depicting the daily, often imperceptible routines in the appropriate context.

Abstract

This book may seem a simple accumulation of twenty-one public space projects in eight Latin American cities. On closer inspection, the presentation of project descriptions, photographs, and annotated drawings reflects a concern to analytically explain the operative aspects at work.0The publication is not intended to serve only as a catalogue, guide, or manual on how to produce public space in spontaneous settlements. Rather, it goes beyond the aims of an index of best practices. It is intended, instead, as an empirical base for a critical and theoretical engagement with the problematic of development, social inclusion, public investment, (in)formal settlement, civil society and the public sphere. The publication achieves its final function at this third level, by providing a compelling argument to expand the agency of architects and urban designers and creatively find ways of justifying, financing, and building public spaces in communities - spaces that have a catalytic effectiveness in achieving significant urban and social transformation.

Abstract

City dwellers are direct agents in the making of cities; yet how do they actually constitute and sustain the urban and its forms? How do they practice the urban and through this practice shape the city-in-the-making that emerges along with them on the backs of their working bodies? City Making re-thinks the urban from this perspective of corporeal making and with regard to the cityness that it bears. It delves into the thick of life in the periphery of Mexico City, uncovering the everyday actions and efforts that practitioners of space accomplish when building houses, creating jobs and putting themselves to work as infrastructure. How are consequential conjunctions, how is access to, and presence in the city actively grown? And what does such thinking the city as a verb, as citying, imply for urban planning?

Abstract

Climate change in the Andes is affecting the relation between urban development and the landscape. Design-led explorations are reframing landscape logics and urbanisation patterns within the Cachi River Basin of Ayacucho, Peru. A co-production of students, researchers and designers, the book suggests alternative futures, crossing scales of landscape systems to new settlement typologies. 'Urban Andes' marks the start of the new series 'LAP' on innovative design research in architecture, urbanism, and landscape. It is the result of a two-year collaboration (2018-2020), initiated by the CCA in cooperation with KU Leuven and various partners, including local organisations and the VLIR-UOS.
