Abstract

To provide for ever-growing populations, cities build new neighbourhoods, transform old industrial areas, and renew the existing urban fabric. The focus now is on energy-neutral neighbourhoods, but in order for these to work, residents must be engaged and the tactics embedded within a broader social policy. This book revisits the neighbourhood as the appropriate scale to build our urban futures: it is small enough to be tangible, large enough to make a difference. Introducing the concepts of neighbourhood arrangements and ecologies, it provides a new perspective on the relation between participants, resources, and rules to spark change and realise future sustainable living.

Abstract

"Water City offers practical solutions to some of the environmental challenges facing 21st century cities as a result of climate change. The dense compact nature of the contemporary city makes it difficult to generate urban resilience to the effects of climate change, particularly coastal and pluvial flooding. This book describes a design-led remediation methodology that draws on catchment planning and GIS mapping and analysis to redefine the city as a series of hydrological and ecological systems. Six case studies test the presented methodology, two greenfield and four brownfield sites based in the UK, USA, New Zealand, and China. Each case study is illustrated with GIS maps and perspectives. Specific solutions to the environment problems that will be intensified by climate change are presented. Water City describes adaptation strategies to help practitioners in the urban landscape tackle these issues and make our cities better places to live. This practical guide is a key read for professionals and stakeholders in landscape architecture, urban design, planning, and all those interested in how climate change will affect the future of our cities"--

Abstract

Cities are under increased pressure to be resilient and resistant to the effects of climate change and rapid urbanisation. However, this idea has still not been fully integrated in to practice. This book presents a practical approach to masterplanning the city and its areas (existing and new) as urban environments for the 21st century, addressing the design of cities as complex adaptive systems. --

Abstract

How architecture and urbanism can help to care for and repair a broken planet: essays and illustrated case studies. Today, architecture and urbanism are capital-centric, speculation-driven, and investment-dominated. Many cannot afford housing. Austerity measures have taken a disastrous toll on public infrastructures. The climate crisis has rendered the planet vulnerable, even uninhabitable. This book offers an alternative vision in architecture and urbanism that focuses on caring for a broken planet. Rooted in a radical care perspective that always starts from the given, in the midst of things, this edited collection of essays and illustrated case studies documents ideas and practices from an extraordinarily diverse group of contributors. Focusing on the three crisis areas of economy, ecology, and labor, the book describes projects including village reconstruction in China; irrigation in Spain; community land trust in Puerto Rico; revitalization of modernist public housing in France; new alliances in informal settlements in Nairobi; and the redevelopment of traditional building methods in flood areas in Pakistan. Essays consider such topics as ethical architecture, land policy, creative ecologies, diverse economies, caring communities, and the exploitation of labor. Taken together, these case studies and essays provide evidence that architecture and urbanism have the capacity to make the planet livable, again.

Abstract

This third and final volume in the Indicia book series presents the results of the Future Cities Laboratory research program in the form of actions for sustainable city-making. It complements the first and second volumes of the series that respectively documented the research challenges and approaches that prefigured these results. Read together, the three volumes chart the full arc and many productive eddies of the five-year program and its mission to shape sustainable future cities. Research results are presented as condensed actions that take the form of general principles, recommendations and practical guidelines. The actions are neither technical standards nor prescriptive checklists but invitations to explore, test and refine research insights within the context in which the reader lives, works and acts. The credibility, salience and legitimacy of each action is underpinned by scientific publications (journal articles, books and exhibitions) presented in extensive footnotes and suggestions for further reading.

Abstract

How can integral circular solutions contribute to the realisation of added value in the neighbourhood? This book provides insight into how citizens can play an active and effective role in the transitions to a circular and sustainable society. Inspiring for citizens who want to develop their own initiatives to make their living environment more sustainable. In Circular Communities, pioneering, collectively supported initiatives are central, aimed at closing resource flows at neighbourhood or district level and thus contributing to the transition to a circular economy. For the analysis of these different initiatives, the researchers - urban planner Els Leclercq and architect Mo Smit - developed a unique method: the Circular Value Flower method. This method helps to organise the joint closing of resource flows (materials, energy, water, biota, nutrients) on a neighbourhood scale and provides insight into the added value (economic, ecological, social, cultural, aesthetic) that can be realised within the built environment. Circular Communities thus offers inspiration and lessons for integral sustainable interventions at the scale of the neighbourhood and ties in with the new Environmental Planning Act (2022), which explicitly offers space for citizen initiatives and local commissioning.

Abstract

"This book tells the story of visionary urban experiments, and delves first into the eco-city, second the smart city and third the autonomous city, where existing smart technologies are evolving into artificial intelligences which are taking the management of the city out of the hands of humans. It is both an examination of the evolution of urban experimentation through the lens of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and a warning. Academics, students and practitioners will find in this book the knowledge that is necessary to comprehend and engage with the many urban experiments that are now alive, ready to leave the laboratory and enter our cities"--

Abstract

Cities have contributed for centuries to the promotion of some of humanity's greatest ideas, we must now urgently include them as among the principal players in the environmental debate and at the forefront of any policy tackling and countering - possibly reversing - climate change. Nevertheless, even today one of the most significant technologies capable of absorbing CO2 and restoring our environment is photosynthesis. Planting trees, in addition to protecting existing natural areas and biodiversity, together with de-carbonization, renewable energies, digitalization, smart mobility and the circular economy could be the set of strategies necessary to tackle climate change. Today the effects of the Anthropocene age are ever more visible, changing our environment and affecting every species that lives within it. Green Obsession offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift - even for architecture and urbanism - that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition. This book aims to unveil the processes and the complexity involved in the search for a new kind of urbanism, while raising questions and opening old wounds related to the relationship between the human species and Nature and finally putting these fragments together to create a portrait of our era. We need to conceive cities as new green catalysts. Now more than ever, it is essential to act together as separate individuals and professionals, joining the cause as members of the global community with a shared environmental strategy. We all have to open the era of a new alliance between Nature and City.
