Mieux connu pour son travail en tant que membre des groupes de free jazz afro-américains d'avant-garde de l'Art Ensemble of Chicago et de l'Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, Jarman est également poète, écrivant des poèmes d'exil, de voyage et de retour à la maison. Le volume I contient des poèmes composés de 1960 à 1970 ;le volume II de 1972 à 1974.
