The works by Isa Genzken have been exhibited in international institutions and galleries for over twenty years. Her work is characterized by a variety of often unexpected materials. Her artistic vocabulary acknowledges modernism as both model and loss, reflecting an awareness of art's present horizon. This book offers a survey that allows the seeming discontinuities in Isa Genzken's work to appear as a complex continuum. It is a sequel to the first part of the catalogue raisonné Jeder braucht mindestens ein Fenster (Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 1992).

The work of German sculptor Isa Genzken is brilliantly receptive to the ever-shifting conditions of modern life. In this first book devoted to the artist, Lisa Lee reflects on Genzken's tendency to think across media, attending to sculptures, photographs, drawings, and films from the entire span of her four-decade career, from student projects in the mid-1970s to recent works seen in Genzken's studio. Through penetrating analyses of individual works as well as archival and interview material from the artist herself, Lee establishes four major themes in Genzken's oeuvre: embodied perception, architecture and built space, the commodity, and the body. Contextualizing the sculptor's engagement with fellow artists, such as Joseph Beuys and Bruce Nauman, Lee situates Genzken within a critical and historical framework that begins in politically fraught 1960s West Germany and extends to the globalized present. Here we see how Genzken tests the relevance of the utopian aspirations and formal innovations of the early twentieth century by submitting them to homage and travesty. Sure to set the standard for future studies of Genzken's work, Isa Genzken is essential for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Isa Genzken is one of the most important, multifaceted, always surprising artists working anywhere worldwide. This is evidenced not only by her largescale exhibitions of recent years, but also by her repeated participation in the documenta in Kassel, the Biennale in Venice or Skulptur Projekte in Münster. She is known for her enormous creative energy and the ability, implicit in her work, to repeatedly reposition herself with artistic curiosity. Her realized and unrealized outdoor sculptures and projects for the public space show the artist's interest in space and the (in this case architectural) environment. Operating in the field of tension between architecture and art, she questions principles of proportions and the relationship between object and viewer, and examines the ways in which perceptions of public space inform and condition our consciousness. The First English-Language Monograph on one of Germany's Most Prominent Artists; Chosen to represent Germany in the 2007 Venice Biennale. Isa Genzken's work encompasses sculpture, collage, film and photography. As one of Germany's leading sculptors to have emerged since the 1980s, her work stands out for its collaborative appeal - combining references to architecture, modernism and art history with the personal. ISA GENZKEN, by Alex Farquhardson, Diedrich Diederichsen and Sabine Breitwieser, is the first English-language monograph on this distinctive artist. Genzken is inspired by the accumulation of material culture, particularly architectural - concrete blocks, glass, mirrored sheets and steel. The combination of materials in her work is remarkable, drawing together animal heads, fluorescent plastic, spray-painted pinecones, children's umbrellas, kitchen utensils and airplane windows, to name a few.
