Never Modern explores the role of narrative, history, and appropriation in the works of the London-based firm 6a Architects, whose recent projects include the South London Gallery, Raven Row, and the new fashion galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum. It examines the unique approach of the members of 6a, wherein they avoid style and signature in favor of a pre-modern sense of metis, or “flair, wisdom, forethought, subtlety of mind, deception, resourcefulness, vigilance, opportunism, varied skills, and experience.” This analysis is accompanied by a striking visual essay of archival photographs, artworks, film stills, and recent projects by the firm. In the end, the book reveals that like contemporary society in general, the architecture of 6a Architects is fundamentally a work of bricolage, creating art composed of various objects on hand and drawing from history and the everyday to create something new and vital.

a+u’s August issue features the work of 6a architects, founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001 and based in London’s historic Holborn district. Deeply immersed in the British art and design scene, and in the cohort of British architects who came of age in the post–high tech 1990s, 6a are at the forefront of a contemporary movement characterized by deep sensitivity to the environment, community, and context, while appearing to play down conventional signatures of style and theory. Divided among 4 chapters – “Repairing,” “Gardening,” “Shaping,” “Walking” – 20 projects present themselves as invitations to distinct experiences. Setting the tone for a trajectory that has endured the past 2 decades, 6a’s earliest work, at Raven Row, captures transformations accrued on the building over the past 300 years and narrates them into a new story through the bricolage of remnants and elaborate interior carvings. The ornate fireplace, relocated a century ago, is restored to its original location, while concrete that was added as a fire protection floor in the 1970s becomes the flooring of the art gallery. Each of the 4 chapters opens with a statement by the protagonists and is brought to reflection by a friendly interlocutor, describing how the architects conscientiously “work with what is already there and understand time as part of that existing material,” that “decay and maintenance are natural conditions of architecture.” 6a’s architecture becomes defined through “invisible mediums amid those things,” like site, materials, tools, and participants. They respond by gently “shaping the things and places that they have found,” and hence every project they touch “extends this idea of architecture dissolving into the city.”

If you've decorated on a budget, you've probably braved IKEA, where the promise of a brighter and better living space comes sealed in a cardboard box. But what do we lose when big-box retailers rule the home furnishings marketplace-and, by extension, our homes? Wouldn't it be more satisfying to surround ourselves with handcrafted pieces that perfectly suit our needs? While making your own furniture is not a requirement for a well-planned home, it is certainly possible-no matter one's budget, skill level, or space-and immensely gratifying. For Dust Free Friends, Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald of the London-based architectural firm 6a architects offer the plans for a series of small pieces of furniture that can be simply assembled with a few common tools and in even the most confined spaces. Inspired in equal parts by the utilitarian forms created on construction sites and the do-it-yourself designs of modernist furniture designer Enzo Mari, each of the sixteen chairs, stools, shelves, and other small pieces of furniture is built of affordable and lightweight plywood, which can be dressed to suit any taste. The plans are easy to follow and just as easy to modify, making the possibilities nearly endless.

Beyond the many elements that make up a building’s appearance, its physical preconditions remain the most important. Buildings are subject to fundamental and immutable laws that impose shapes, patterns, orders, and constraints. ‘The Bones of Architecture’ investigates the cultivation of structures for architecture. Several European architects and engineers present their works and approaches while reflecting on rules, strategies, and methods in structural design. Various design strategies are explored through selected projects by 6A Architects, Rui Furtado, Bruther Architects, Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter, Alejandro Bernabeu, Brandlhuber+, and Ingegneri Pedrazzini Guidotti.
