In dit boek wordt op praktische wijze ingegaan op de functies van verpakken en de daarbij te gebruiken verpakkingen. Uitgangspunt is een beoordeling binnen de normale samenhang van de voedingsmiddelenketen. De eisen op het gebied van gebruik, kwaliteit, milieu en operationele uitvoering worden behandeld. Om echter een optimale verpakking te maken moeten deze verschillende eisen worden afgewogen door middel van een ketenbeoordeling van het verpakte product. De opzet en de praktische uitvoering van dergelijke functionele beoordeling worden behandeld. Er wordt een groot aantal aanwijzingen gegeven voor zowel productontwikkelaars als verpakkingstechnologen om gestructureerd verpakkingen te ontwerpen en te optimaliseren. Voor oefening wordt een aantal vereenvoudigde maar praktische problemen opgenomen.
