Abstract

This book is intended to provide an account of uptake, transport and loss of water by the benefit of students of botany, plant physiology, agriculture and horticulture. It begins by explaining the importance of water to plants and describing the efeects of its availability on plant structure. A non-mathematical treatment of the structure and properties of water and the physical phenomena underlying its movement leads on to an examination of the water relations of plant cells. The water potential terminology, advocated in the first edition of this book and now widely accepted by plant physiologists is used throughout. Methods employed in the measurement of the various components of water potential, including solute, pressure, and matric potentials are described and assessed. Other chapters are devoted to the regulation of the turgidity of guard cells, control of transpiration, and the movement of water through plants. Emphasis is placed on the functioning of a plant as an integrated whole in response to varying environmental conditions.
