Abstract

The revised and expanded second edition of Biological Inorganic Chemistry, winner of a 2013 Texty Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, presents an introduction to this exciting and dynamic field. An increasing understanding of the importance of metals in biology, the environment and medicine, and the multiple roles of metal ions in biological systems, has given rise to biological inorganic chemistry as a field of study. The book begins with an overview of the concepts, both chemical and biological, required for the detailed analysis which follows. Pathways of

Abstract

This important new textbook is the culmination of 25 years of teaching microbial physiology and metabolism to undergraduate and graduate students. A theme that guided the writing of this textbook is that students must not simply memorize material such as metabolic pathways and bioenergetic models, but they should understand the underlying principles. To that end, similarities and contrasts between metabolic pathways and other physiological activities are pointed out through the textbook, and separate sections are devoted to describing the chemistry and physics for key reactions. In addition to describing physiological and metabolic features common to most microorganisms, the textbook also offers a modern perspective on metabolic diversity. Topics included in this text are: cell structure, growth, bioenergetics, electron transport, photosynthesis, metabolic regulation, intermediary metabolism, cell wall biosynthesis, fermentations, C1 metabolism, inorganic metabolism, solute transport, protein secretion, homeostasis, and two-component as well as other signaling systems. Each chapter concludes with a summary emphasizing the major points covered, and a set of study questions to test the students' mastery of the material.

Abstract

With a balance of topic coverage and depth this updated third edition covers the subject of biochemistry, and reflects the advances made in this field since the second edition published in 1981. These advances are incorporated without loss of historical perspective and without obscuring the main goal of the text: to teach the enduring fundamentals of the discipline. Included in the third edition is a completely reorganized part one introducing the flow of information from gene to protein. It emphasizes the growing interrelatedness of molecular biology and biochemistry, and acquaints one with experimental methods of both disciplines. Also included is 150 new problems and a wealth of new material on molecular genetics and cellular processes.
