Het thema van dit boek is het ontstaan, de ontwikkeling en het verdwijnen van oceanische eilanden. Uitgangspunt hierbij is de theorie van de platentektoniek. In tien rijk geïllustreerde hoofdstukken worden op heldere wijze de ontdekking, exploratie, morfologie, geologie, biologie en bevolking van oceanische eilanden behandeld. Hoewel de nadruk ligt op de geologie, is het boek voor een brede groep geïnteresseerden interessant, vanwege de geïntegreerde manier waarop bovenstaande onderwerpen aan de lezer gepresenteerd worden. Behalve door de goed geschreven tekst valt het boek op door de kwaliteit van de illustraties. De vele (lucht-)foto's van eenzaam gelegen koraaleilandjes vormen een passende begeleiding bij de tekst. Het is een kwalitatief hoogstaand boek, dat bij uitstek geschikt is voor informatieve doeleinden op MO- en HBO-nivo.
