Der Danielkommentar des Hippolyt von Rom, um 204 n. Chr. verfasst, gilt als die älteste vollständig erhaltene Auslegung eines biblischen Textes aus christlicher Feder. Der Danielkommentar bietet einen einzig artigen Einblick in die Frühzeit des christlichen Bibelkommentars. Die Form des Anmerkungskommentars wurde gewählt, um ein besseres Verständnis für die heutigen Leser des inzwischen über 1800 Jahre alten Hippolytschen Danielkommentars zu ermöglichen. Besondere Sorgfalt ist darauf verwendet worden, das Geflecht der zahlreichen intertextuellen Bezüge, die zwischen Hippolyts Auslegung, dem kommentierten Text des Danielbuches und anderen Bibeltexten bestehen, nicht nur durch einen Bibelstellenapparat nachzuweisen, sondern dem heutigen Leser auch typographisch augenfällig zu machen. Die deutsche Übersetzung basiert auf der Textausgabe von Marcel Richard (GCS. NF 7, Berlin 2000).

Die Reihe Die Griechischen Christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten Jahrhunderte (GCS) veröffentlicht seit 1897 (zuerst in Leipzig, dann in Berlin) die Ergebnisse des Akademieprojektes Griechische Christliche Schriftsteller, begonnen in der damaligen Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, fortgeführt in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Sie bietet in großen kritischen Ausgaben mit historisch orientierenden Einleitungen und Registern diejenigen Werke, die ursprünglich im griechischsprachigen Teil des antiken kaiserzeitlichen Christentums entstanden sind und nicht von den anderen großen Editionsreihen herausgegeben werden. Für die ersten drei Jahrhunderte wird dabei Vollständigkeit angestrebt.

The commentary is the earliest extant Christian commentary on a book of the Bible and the Chronicon is the first extant Christian historical work.
