Since the work of Paul Monceaux at the beginning of the 20th century the African hagiographic corpus has evolved. New texts were discovered while others were excluded from the corpus. Thus a new thorough study of the North African hagiography has been highly desired. The present work offers an analysis of a reshaped corpus, composed of thirty acts and passions, which describe the martyrdom of Christians between the 2nd and the late 5th century. The first part of the book examines connections between hagiography and the North African local history, namely the way authors place the facts in the historical and geographical context. The second part focuses on the construction of a hagiographical discourse through the study of the terminology of the martyrdom, the virtues and heroization of persecuted Christians. The third part explores literary personalities of the hagiographers, analysing the use of biblical, classical and patristic sources in the texts. The book provides a contribution to the political and cultural history of North Africa in Late Antiquity.

Perpetua's Passions is a collection of studies about Perpetua, a young female Christian martyr who was executed in 203 AD. Like her spiritual guide, Saturus, Perpetua left a diary, and a few years after their deaths a fellow Christian collected these writings and supplied them with an introduction and epilogue : the so-called Passion of Perpetua. The result is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic works of antiquity, which the present volume examines from a wide range of perspectives : literary, narratological, historical, religious, psychological, and philosophical viewpoints follow upon a newly edited text and English translation (by Joseph Farrell and Craig Williams). This innovative treatment by a number of distinguished scholars not only complements its unique subject, but constitutes a kind of laboratory of new approaches to ancient texts.

The ideology and imagery in the Passion of Perpetua are mediated heavily by traditional Graeco-Roman culture; in particular, by traditional notions of the afterlife and of the ascent of the soul. This context for understanding the Passion of Perpetua aligns well with the available material evidence, and with the writings of Tertullian, with whose ideology the text of Perpetua is in an implicit polemical dialogue.Eliezer Gonzalez analyzes how the Passion of Perpetua provides us with early literary evidence of an environment in which the Graeco-Roman and Christian cults of the dead, including the cults of the martyrs and saints, appear to be very much aligned. He also shows that the text of the Passion of Perpetua and the writings of Tertullian provide insights into an early stage in the polemic between these two conceptualisations of the afterlife of the righteous.
