Lo scopo di questa ricerca è quello di proporre una nuova ipotesi sull'origine del cero pasquale e il suo legame con il battesimo. L'uso del cero sorse nell'Italia settentrionale verso la fine del IV secolo, in un contesto ariano, e fu accolto a Roma, ma non nella liturgia papale, in concomitanza con la condanna del Pelagianesimo. Il punto di partenza dell'indagine è la colonna di porfido, che l'imperatore Costantino fece collocare nel centro della vasca nel battistero lateranense, elemento architettonico che sembra aver ispirato l'immersione del cero nel fonte. Questo rito vuole significare la discesa della grazia santificante sull'acqua per la rigenerazione dei neofiti. In alcune antiche tradizioni liturgiche, il legame tra il cero pasquale e il fonte battesimale venne reso più esplicito collocando la benedizione del cero dopo le letture e prima della benedizione del fonte. Nella liturgia romana, questo lega-me si allentò gradualmente, quando si cominciò a celebrare la veglia pasquale senza i sacramenti dell'iniziazione cristiana. Recuperare l'intimo legame tra il cero e il fonte serve a render più esplicita l'altissima vocazione che i cristiani ricevono nel battesimo: diventare, per grazia, partecipi della vita divina (cf. 2 Pt 1,4).

Dit boek bundelt de bijdragen van de sprekers tijdens het 64ste liturgisch congres in november 2019. Het congres zoomde in op de betekenis van de paastijd en staat in het bijzonder stil bij de afronding ervan: de hoogfeesten van Hemelvaart en Pinksteren. Het programma wil de rijkdom van die afsluiting van de paastijd ontsluiten voor een breed publiek met verschillende achtergronden en interesses. Dat gebeurt door een combinatie van Bijbelse, historische, tekstuele, artistieke, muzikale en praktische perspectieven. Met bijdragen van Anne Desplenter, Karel D’Huys, Anthony Dupont, Joris Geldhof, zr. Hildegard Koetsveld, Bianca Lataire, Herbert Vandersmissen en mgr. Koen Vanhoutte.

Découvert dans un manuscrit de Montpellier, le Livre de l’évêque Timothée sur la Pâque est une source inédite d’une richesse exceptionnelle sur un sujet mal connu et complexe : les controverses pascales du début du IVe siècle en Orient. Cette lettre pastorale, rédigée en grec par un certain évêque Timothée à une communauté non identifiable, et transmise en latin, constitue une source de premier plan concernant quatre déviances relatives aux célébrations de Pâques, déviances dont elle atteste la présence en Anatolie dans le premier quart du IVe siècle : l’une d’entre elles n’avait même jusqu’ici jamais été répertoriée. À travers elles, l’auteur laisse aussi entrevoir une situation politique complexe, que ce soit dans les relations entre communautés chrétiennes, entre chrétiens et juifs, ou encore entre christianisme et administration civile. La présence d’un extrait de l’ouvrage dans les carnets de saint Augustin illustre quant à elle son rôle dans l’histoire des textes et l’importance de la question pascale en termes non seulement de calendrier liturgique, mais aussi d’identité religieuse et d’exégèse.
